feels like every year the free drinks get harder to come by unless youre betting $100 a hand. used to be you could sit at a nickel slot and get buzzed for cheap but now the cocktail waitresses just disappear for hours.
i know it depends on the casino but i swear i have seen less free stuff while gambling lately

maybe they have a shortage of customers.

Usually , the more you rake and the longer you stay you get more free drinks.
And for the super rich , every drink and food is free cause they rake about 500$ in avg per minute.
Ofc more common in big casinos like the Monte Carlo in Monaco, or the King's Casino in Rozvadov.
A sheik or movie star won't be seen in any small local casino ^^

Smaller casinos might not make enough profit to hand out free drinks. Not every casino owner is rich actually. Highly depends on country and legal situation

Bad in economics, too high taxation etc
I can tell you an example in Austria . 30% of all income goes to the state.
There as a guy who owned around 15 Casinos in Austria, Czechia and Slovenia.
Even though poker was classified as a game of skill, our state didn't like not having the monopoly on poker.
Laws changed and poker was integrated in the gambling law so there was no new license issued for Zanoni and he was forced to shut them down.
Now the state casinos have a monopoly on gambling even though monopolies are against our constitution.

So this is one example where a government ruined a flourishing pokerscene.

And I'm sure Zanoni is not alone and many casino owners all over the world got screwed by their gov.

Free drinks are usually reserved for guests playing games. If most of them are sitting at slot machines, playing blackjack, roulette, or baccarat, it means they're actively spending money. Therefore, a staff member might approach them and offer them a drink. At first glance, this may seem like a loss, but if guests stay long enough and spend more money, these costs can be recovered.

I have no trouble getting drinks for free in Vegas, (Other than sometimes slow service at the slots as you mention) but at my local casino you only get water and sodas for free.

With that said I very rarely drink anymore so for me it is almost a non-issue.

Lately, especially after the pandemic, businesses have been very picky about unnecessary expenses. Starting from cookies and coffee in the offices, ending with freerolls on our favorite poker sites. The trend is not very encouraging.

I don't drink alcohol, so I don't really care if there are free drinks or not. A cup of delicious tea is more than enough for me. And in principle I can go and get it myself :)

It probably depends on the location, but there are some oddities—for instance, in Bulgarian summer resorts, there are casinos that only operate for three or four months. When you consider the cost of the license, a couple of big ones might somehow manage to break even, but the smaller ones likely don't.

What’s more, there’s a story about some patrons who were nearly beaten up for winning the jackpot—thereby depriving the staff of their cash bonuses.

I think its indicative of whats going on with the casinos.

They continue to get tighter on comps and payouts.

Business is cutting costs. Everyone is saving, but this is not surprising given the trends in the global economy that we are seeing. Life has become more expensive, and in the future it will be even more expensive.

You would think that getting players drunk would help you get more money by them playing carelessly

Yes, given inflation and various upheavals, the cost of living and the final product have gone up; earning money has become harder—making money effectively "dearer"—yet at the same time, it has become cheaper.
Yeah, nothing good will come of this.

I go to the casino primarily for the game. Free drinks are not a priority for me. Tea or coffee is good, but tea and coffee are things you can afford to buy.

I choose an institution for myself based on other criteria. I am willing to pay more, but only if the service is at the proper level.

Same here, I may have one or two drinks, but I have to drive home afterwards, I would lose a lot more money than I would win at a casino if I lost my drivers license.
