Hey everyone,

I’ve been spending most of my time on the poker felt lately, but I’ve noticed a lot of players in the CardsChat community often jump over to casino games or slots when they want a break from the high-intensity grind of MTTs or cash games.

One thing I’ve been struggling with is keeping the bankrolls separate. When you’re playing poker, it’s all about ROI and long-term variance, but when you step into the world of online casinos, the strategy changes completely. I recently found a great guide on how to balance these two worlds without draining your poker funds.

For those of you who play both:
  1. Do you keep a strictly separate bankroll for poker and "fun" casino games?
  2. Do you find that certain casino games (like Blackjack) help your poker discipline, or do they hurt it?
  3. What’s your "go-to" game when you’re on a break from a long poker session?
Would love to hear how you guys manage the crossover!

I enjoy a few spins at jacks or better video poker . But you gotta be able to step away ; the machines come out ahead long term .

That is a solid point about the mental shift required when moving from poker to house games. The biggest hurdle for most poker players is moving from a game of "skill vs. people" to a game of "math vs. the house."

In poker, you can be the favorite in a hand, but in the casino, the house is the mathematical favorite over the long haul. If you’re making that transition, the best way to manage your bankroll is to treat casino games as an entertainment expense rather than an income stream.

A few tips for the transition:

  • Lower your stakes: Your poker bankroll shouldn't be your casino bankroll. Start much smaller.
  • Time-box your sessions: Unlike a long poker tournament, the longer you sit at a slot or a blackjack table, the more the house edge grinds you down.
  • Avoid the "chase": In poker, you can sometimes "out-play" a bad run. In casino games, you can't out-play the RNG.
Are you planning on sticking to table games like blackjack where there is a bit of strategy involved, or are you moving straight into the high-variance world of slots?

I am not a huge casino gambler but I would assume you cannot have a bankroll for Casino as you cannot mathematically be a "winning" casino player - opposed to poker.

I would set a budget/limit for Casino games - which I can afford to lose. Although it would feel tough to gamble away my poker winnings, so that should not harm my poker bankroll at best.

Happy to hear other thoughts though :)

If you're trying to build a bank roll AVOID CASINO GAMES!!!
People win at poker because there is a skill edge involved between players - the house takes a cut, but in the long run the more skillful player will win.
With casino games, you are only playing against the house. The house has the edge, which means in the long run, the house always wins.
If you're a losing player (this includes poker) you do not have a bankroll - you have a budget; expendable income that you can afford (hopefully) to lose.
My advice? Don't play casino games at all. If you're going to, stick to a very strict budget that doesn't come from your poker bank roll.

Effective bankroll management begins with a clear definition of its size and purpose. This allows not only for financial planning but also for minimizing potential losses. For professional players and traders, a bankroll often serves as an indicator of their financial preparedness for risky transactions.Proper bankroll management also contributes to psychological comfort and confidence in making financial decisions.

You can go multiple ways with this, I usually like to play the casino with pure profit (could be poker, BJ etc) instead of pulling into my own pockets. or I set a maximum spending limit for a month on casino games.

The only way to manage your money wisely in casino games is to not play casino games.
However, some people claim to use it for fun, but there are other ways to spend money and have fun.
Finally, the key to properly managing your poker balance is to understand that your money for this game has a limit and you can't exceed it. This money should be used exclusively for poker, and if you make big profits, you can use it for your daily expenses.

I don't have a separate bankroll for casino games.
I don't think casino games affect my poker results in any way.
My favorite game is any slots where I have free spins.
My game schedule is pretty primitive, I play casino games no more than 3-5 hours a month.

I think there is no real transition happening here as you change from something where skill has a certain impact on your results to something pure luck based.

1. It's not very easy to do that as most sites have all your money in one place (Balance). Some sites used to have a "Wallet" from which you take the amount you want whether to poker or to the casino section.
2. I don't see how Blackjack can help my poker discipline or hurt it. They are two completely different games.
3. If I go to the casino (Very rarely) after a poker session, it would be to a Blackjack table and never anything else.

The only EV+ thing you can do in a casino is to look for coins under machines. Stay far away IMO. The machines are designed to be addictive and suck up money. There is no winning in the long run.

never given it much thought, but it is a good idea to have a separate bankroll where sites allow it.
I do have a separate small bankroll for sports betting, so I will put aside a few bucks to play blackjack
and maybe other games if I can build my bankroll. I don't take breaks from poker, but I do like to take a shot at other games,
hence the sports betting one, where I bet on fights and sometimes on horse racing or football.

I have a poker bankroll. It is my only one and untouched. I play other gambling games only when I need to apply for a withdrawal from my poker account. Before I withdraw, I spend a few more bucks on other casino games.

I like using the same bankroll for poker and casino games . The best it would be my poker freerolls or bu] in games to fund my fun casino slot sessions . Cause the opposite is sth hard to happen , slots are fun to play but hard to win and build a bankroll . Very hard to get very big wins . That's why I liked in [he past sites that offered poker and casino games , like bwin or pokerstars .

I allocate $10 a week for the game. This is an acceptable amount for me. This amount is my limit for the game. Sometimes I can skip a week or two and then I play with a higher limit of $20 or $30 per evening. In my opinion, a bankroll for playing in an online casino is not necessary because such games cannot potentially be profitable for the player in the long term.

No, not separate, but I wish for that option to show up in the different poker rooms. That would make it easier to keep them separate.
  1. Do you find that certain casino games (like Blackjack) help your poker discipline, or do they hurt it?
I dont think they help or hurt it. Poker is its own game, strategy, timing and luck all involved.
  1. What’s your "go-to" game when you’re on a break from a long poker session?
I have a few favorite casino games I like to play.

Bankroll management requires a positive Return on Investment. The higher your ROI the less buyins required in your bankroll.

In casino games you should have no expectation of winning, so you cant have bankroll requirement.

Casino games should be viewed more like an entertainment budget. Its like going to a movie, you might find a twenty dollar bill on the floor, but you should not expect it to happen in the future.

Use the responsible gaming tools at sites to put wager limits. Casino games it's so easy to wager too much since you might win little, then lose little, win little, lose little. Your total amount wagered just increases slowly to enormous amounts

How's the topless jelly wrestling betting going, is it keeping your poker playing continuous? :p

My advise to the OP since they are transitioning would be to have one 30 min session and kiss that bankroll goodbye. A winning poker player wouldn't be transitioning to games where you have less chance, so a 30 min session should do it, no bankroll left = transition complete.

Poker brings me an average of $200 a month. Of that money, I usually allocate 10% to play other casino games. That means I have an average of $20 a month to play.
