Day 1 Update

Day 1 Update
Sorry for the delay on the update folks. I was out late last night and didn't expect to wake up so late! But we are up, rested and ready for poker for the next two days straight. I am hoping they prove as fruitful as the first.

Day 1 was a pretty good day as far as how far I got. I started off with 8$ and and played for most of the day with little gains. After a little sleep and some renewed initiative I put in some very good sessions and worked my way up to 17.07$. I'd say doubling your bankroll on the first day is probably a very good start. Right now the only games unlocked to me are .02/.04 NLHE Cash Games (there are 5 of them) and a .60 Buyin Sit N Go (Named the Fast Fifty). Here is my experience in both.

The Fast Fifty (Sit N Go) - .50 + .10 Buyin - This tournament goes so fast that if you had all good players sitting at it, it would be so much more about luck then skill it would kill any kind of play. Fortunately, the players playing there are on the opposite end of the spectrum. With a little luck if you just sit back and wait for hands then maximize the profit (never hard with so many callers) then you should be able to make the money every time.

Havana - .02/.04 NLHE - Again the players here are so soft that to beat the game you just have to wait for a hand and then when you get one make sure you get the most value you can. It is not uncommon to triple or quadruple up at these tables as you will usually find more then a few calling stations.

Daily Lesson: Value Betting

A sometimes overlooked part of poker value betting is very integral to a good players game. Value betting isn't about betting the most when you've got it or even just maximizing your wins. It's about betting the 'amount' with the hands you have with the board you have and most importantly your opponent and your opponents hand. For instance if you have 2 3 and the flop comes A Q 7 rainbow and you know your opponent isn't going to fold most of the time and has A A, then you are not going to bet. Even though it is a duhr that you shouldn't bet the 2 3 into the A A for most you just have to realize that you stand nothing to gain from making any x amount of bet. Same thing with A A with the A Q 7 rainbow and your opponent has 2 3 but you know he's not likely to call but there is a good chance he likes to bluff. There is no value in betting here and you serve better to your value to check this flop in hopes that he bluffs since there is no card that can help him. Of course these are two extreme cases and aren't likely to happen but you should surely learn to maximize the value of your bets i.e. Bet a lot when you have the better of two great hands, bet to stall your opponent or check on a draw, fold bad hands or hands you stand nothing to gain, etc.

Overall, I am hoping that day 2 is just as fruitful as day 1 and that I can at the least move up in stakes by Monday. I have done the math and I will have to move up in stakes once every 6.6667 days to reach my goal and it would be best to beat that date the first time since some of the time I will most undoubtedly have less time to play then others.

Good luck to you OP.

You ask for suggestions, so I thought I'd throw in a couple.

1. It doesn't look to me like "Reefer" has enough tables in play for you to reach your goal. You might want to add another site once you get a bit more in your Bank Roll. IMO, you will have to play more than 6 tables at a time.

2. Get some video of your play thru this because if you actually do it, it will be pretty big and I for one would love to see some video.

Someone mentioned a "Prop" bet. I'm not being negative, so don't take this the wrong way. I will match any amount over the $10K and contribute it to the Charity chosen by the board. (ie-If you get to $12000, I'll donate $2000)

Good Luck

If you actually succeed in this you should consider going pro. $60k a year isn't too shabby.

I'm willing to make a prop bet too, but I'm not giving you 10:1 odds. I'll put in $5 and give you 2:1 that you won't make it.

Day 2 Update

Well day 2 ended about an hour ago and after a break I have decided to blog and then get back into the fray. Day 2 went just as well as Day 1 if not better. These .02 / .04 games are so soft it is unbelievable. Not that I haven't had any shortage of luck on my side. I played about 1.5k hands today and in that I got aces once which is weird because yesterday I got aces 4 times. Just a weird observation. Anywho on to what actually happened:

Session 1 - 4:01pm - 5:30pm
Session 1 was pretty mediocre for the most part. I stayed about even at the 17$ mark for about an hour until I pushed in the end to about 20$. The action was slower then usual (perhaps better players playing). In the end my wireless router went out and I deemed it a sign that I should stop that session for the day. I multi-tabled .02 / .04 Havanna Tables the entire time. One interesting story from this blog is that I get a lot of people asking me why I am playing such low stakes compared to before. One such person claimed to have played with me often at higher stakes and we had a long chat which turned out interesting. In the end I put on a real hurting of a beating on her (almost felt bad .... almost....) which you can see on hand #1 of my favorite hands from day 2.

Session 2 - 10:00pm - 12:00am (o.k. so my session went a bit over but I will still put it as day 2)
Session 2 was very very streaky. I was on my dual screen computer which allowed me to play more then four tables. At this point since I am legally by my bankroll status able to play .02 / .04 comfortably I upped my buy-in to 1$ instead of the .50 cents I was buying with. Usually I buy-in for max but only when single or double tabling. When the number of tables reaches three or four then I have to lower the buy-in to keep my bankroll safer. Anywho, the added buy-in turned out to pay dividens right away as all of my double ups were up to 2$ instead of 1$ and so forth. The tables (except for one staunch table that I was receiving beats in) were running very hot. I ran up to 7 tables at one time (five .02 / .04 tables and two .60 Sit n Gos). I lost both Sit N Gos without winning any hands basically. One cash game was running slow and I kept getting bad beat in. The other four tables seemed to be going too good to be true but in the end it wasn't a dream and I ended each table above 3$ (two had over 7$ when I finished). I won my biggest pot yet at this stage which was for 4.32$. A very very good session.

Overall, I started the day at 17.07$ and ended the day at 34.30$. I doubled my bankroll for the second day in a row (I don't expect the trend to continue). I am ahead of schedule as far as jumping limits goes but I fully expected the first one to be that way. I expect to jump up to .05 / .10 tables sometime tomorrow when I reach the 500 BB necessary (50$ required). Here is a screenshot at the end of the day.

Well, this challenge is definitely not something I would have the patience to do. You on the other hand--- You can do it. It'll take a lot of patience and skill, But i think it can be done.

As for your best friend thinking her hands are best - she's probably right. ;)

i suspect that this will end the way that all these threads seem to end, with the poster disappearing after a few updates when things start to go sour. poker seems like an easy game until you're running bad

gl though, i hope you make some money

Day 2 Randomness

I am now going to have a Q & A / Factoid section in the second part of my updates / blog here. This is to field questions and maybe just respond to some of the readers. If you have any questions I will answer any and all of them.

Q & A / Factoid Section

Q: Do you really think you can make it?
A: I do believe in myself to complete this challenge. I believe I have the skills necessary as well as the time and patience to pull this off. If I didn't I would have set the bar lower. Now would I be surprised if I didn't pull this off. Not in the slightest. I set the bar in such a way that it was very difficult to pull off. Thus the term "challenge".

Q: What is your motivation for doing such a challenge?
A: I want to show the world that anybody can fulfill their dreams. I know it is corny but really that is my main ambition in trying my hand at this.

Q: Can you play the new depositor freerolls?
No, I cannot. These freerolls are for new depositors and I, unfortunatley, am an old depositor. But, I expect that people who were then new depositors would have an advantage over me.

Q: Good motivation, I just don't think this will be possible in 2 months. If it were even close, I would just keep my mouth shut....didn't it take Chris Ferguson, a pro player, like a year?

I appreciate all comments even ones like this one. Chris Ferguson took 15 months to complete his challenge which was start from 0$ and reach 10,000$. And while it is debatable that C. Ferg is a much better player then me ;) there are many advantages I have over him in this challenge. One, was that he started from 0 and and worked his way up while I started from 8$. Another is that he took 7 months just to stabilize his bankroll at 6.50$ while I have already far surpassed that mark and my bankroll is stable. Another advantage is that C. Ferg only had so much time to play between his pro activities and while I have obligations as well (school, family, friends) I do have considerably more time to spend on this adventure. The only two advantages I can think that he had over me are experience and the benefit of a larger site.

Q: You are not going to make it.... how about a prop bet?
A: I am still debating taking prop bets at this time. I will let you know in the next couple days for sure. I just know I am going to get a lot of action if I start prop bets.

Q: Will you switch sites to play more tables?
A: I am not planning to do so at this time but it is something I will consider in the near future if I stand to gain a lot. My reasoning is that not everyone has the luxury of switching sites like that (I know from past experience)

Q: Will you do some video?
A: I will be trying to set this up when I reach some of the bigger tables. Probably some time next week. I would do it sooner but I have to set up a mic and I have to go digging :)

Q: What else are you planning to do with this challenge?
A: I am going to start opening up this blog to more places. Right now I am blogging on three forums and some blogging spots that aren't really all that popular. I am going to open up to more forums probably including big ones like 2 + 2 and Rounders Radio. Hopefully by tomorrow.

Favorite Hands of Day 2

1. Yours Truly 2 Outer - Bad Beat against a friend
I really don't know what prompted me to think she was screwing with me but this is once instance where I made a really bad read but got paid off anyway. The only reason I had made this call was because I saw her make some incredible bluffs earlier which set me up for this. You hate to see this happen as a skill player but I couldn't mind the extra 4$ could I? She was really cool about it since she seemed to like me so much.

2. Fish Sucks out on Yours Truly
Since I showed one of my two outers I thought it only prudent that I show a two outer hit against me to even the odds (mwuahhahahah). This hand also shows again how many fish play at these tables and how soft they really are.

3. Correction - Bigger Pot
I have to correct an earlier statement that the biggest pot I made was in the 4 - 5$ range since I foudn two instances where the pot was bigger then that. My actual largest pot of the day was 7.43$. This one though is the second biggest pot of the day clocking in at 6.56$. It really shows how much hands like suited connectors and low pocket pairs can win big when hit. It also shows how you should bet a lot more if you want to protect your hadn preflop and not overplay your hand afterwards like some animal that lives in an aquarium setting.

Frankly, if you can win 1st place in 3 freerolls for 7K, you don't need to be playing freerolls. Even the best tournament players on the planet couldn't win 3 of those in the same month.

its not about just playing the freerolls. you are gathering comp points why not play the freerolls that you qualify for to add to the bank roll. the freerolls are very soft, if you make it past the first hour in good shape then you should make it to the money.

Have to say I'm impressed with your start- great going!

I'd say ignore the prop bets (you dont really want the CC sharks coming en masse to your tables to try and wipe you out!!)

As for the person who commented on the freerolls- if you won the $50k monthly, wouldnt you get $10k or so??- pretty easy to qualify for, just need to win the freeroll! (not easy..)

Not sure if merge still have the mtts with gtd prizepools- there were often overlays if they do, so they could be worth a look once you get the bankroll a bit higher...

Bit late, but think you'd be better off doing this on Carbon- they have far better offers and bonuses for higher rakers from what I can see

I had nothing in my bankroll and tried to make something starting with freerolls. My break came when I won $6 in a freeroll. I turned it into $39 in about a week and lets see how it goes from there. The key is patience, skill, and a little luck helps.

Day 3 Blog

Well Day 3 was a frustrating long day to say the least. But I finally made it to the next level! I made it there at approximately 12:57am so technically it's day 4 but I will be blogging about that entire session as if it were all day 3.

Session 1 - I started my first session at around 2:45pm and it lasted for about 3 hours and I was very very tired by the end of this. I forget how much I was down after the session but it couldn't have been more then 2$. It was a very frustrating session. I might have gotten Kings and Queens 8 - 9 times and I lost 5 -6 of them by virtue of preflop all-in. But you gotta figure that eventually the good luck I was having was going to catch up to me. Luckily for me these players are so horrible that all the bad luck I was having didn't really effect anything too drastically. I suspect that if I was playing this loose and had this luck in the higher levels I would not be so fortunate.

Break - I took a break from about 5:45pm - 7:45pm. This is lunch time for me since I live on the pacific coast of the USA and I am three hours behind that time. I had two personal pizzas and some chips. After which I started to have a crazy pain in my right cheek area. So to cope so I could play the rest of the day I popped an IB profin which made everything better but I was quite out of it for the remainder of the day and still am.

Session 2 - Session 2 pretty much was a bogged down version of session 1 today. It lasted from 7:48 pm - 9:50pm. I needed to eat dinner at this point but I basically ended up 6$ and ended up in very prime postion to get to the next level. I was very excited after this. During this time I chatted with some of my real life poker playing buddies and was talking about the challenge.

Session 3 - Session 3 lasted from 11:00pm - 12:57am. As I said earlier it spilled over into day 4 but I will blog about it together. Session 3 was very fun for me. There was a lot of up and downs and though I ended up being 2 - 5$ from my goal for about an hour or two (I even passed it then lost a big pot to fall back below it) I eventually attained by goal though a little later then I might have liked. Threre were so many great hands from this session that I will show five of my favorite hands this time as opposed to the usual three.

Overall, I gotta say I enjoyed playing at the .02 / .04 level even though the stakes were so low. I found out the turbo micro stakes sit n gos are horrible and really offer no chance for players of skill to work their way up nor is there enough of them to make a profit. I won't be playing any more sit n gos until I can play at the 2 + .20$ level where my options open up considerably. Until then I will be playing strictly NLHE cash games and the one .05/.10 PLO table there is (I am very dissapointed there is only one PLO table at this level). I will be taking this all into account at each level and making suggestions to the site where necessary. I will be taking a short break and going to the grocery store then coming back to start my experience at the next level. I am ahead of schedule by about 3.5 days as far as jumping levels goes but I know full well that this is how it should be since I am playing the easiest games first. I expect it to take me 4 days to get passed the next level but we will see how it runs.

Day 3 Q & A and Hands

Day 3 Q & A

Q: How many hands do you plan on playing at a time?
A: It depends. I have two seperate computers and one has one screen and the other is setup with dual screens. If I am playing on the single screen cpu then I will usually play 4 tables at once. If I am playing on the dual screen cpu I can play 5 - 8 but I usually limit it to 4 - 5 (One time I did go up to 7 so far) for skill purposes. Obviously the more tables you play the less you can pay attention. I expect the number of tables I play to drop as I go up in stakes as I will be playing against the better players.

Q: You can't do it. Just stop. Your not going to be able to finish.
A: This isn't really a question but I will answer to it anywho. Maybe I can't and maybe I can. Either way I feel this is a doable challenge for me with the right parameters in place. I will not stop blogging my challenge unless I say the challenge is over on each and everyone of my forum and blogging sites. I am not saying you can't say that I can't do it obviously but I do truly believe this is doable by the right players with the right amount of time.

Favorite Hands of Day 3

1. Another fishy hand
There is so many of these I could show and I know it is becoming redundant to show the fish hands but really I think this is very representative of what happened at these tables. My final analysis is that about 2 / 10 players are this fishy and 5 / 10 are donkeys. You might find one or two decent (I didn't say good) players at a table.

2. A very, very interesting hand
This is a very interesting call I made here I think. Looking back I still agree with my call and the odds I was getting but then again I didn't know the cards until they were flipped over. Let me know what you think.

4. The are of Calling a Bluff
Sometimes the bet just seems so out there with the cards out there that you know something is awry. I couldnt put my opponent on any hand that wasn't a bluff and ended up making this call. Was it a brilliant read? Not so much as a horrible betting pattern but I'll take credit for brilliance :)

5. The worst of all the beats!
This really isn't the most horrible beat of many that I've encountered but it was the worst I took on the day and really hit me in a spot I didn't want to be hit in. This was when I was close to reaching my goal and I found myself way out in front but the turn card killed my hopes and aspirations. The reason this was such a bad beat for me is the amount of money involved and the timing. That is my sob story for today.

okay, this is sort of what i figured. again, not trying to be negative, just realism. even if you're the greatest player on earth, with the volume you're playing, it's basically not doable at the cash tables alone. you'll have to play much much more or get thousands in tournament scores to have a shot. obviously that could happen because MTTs are very high variance, it's just not likely

it's not an insult at all. there's just genuinely not a cash game winrate anyone could realistically attain that would make that much money over how few hands you're planning to play, using any sort of bankroll management. your expectations are a little bit delusional, but i wish you luck

I had nothing in my bankroll and tried to make something starting with freerolls. My break came when I won $6 in a freeroll. I turned it into $39 in about a week and lets see how it goes from there. The key is patience, skill, and a little luck helps.

What site do you use for your freerolls?

The naysayers need to learn a thing or two about poker. The odds are against him yes, but isn't this the fun in poker?

I believe he can do it. I turned 50$ into 2500$ in two nights so I believe it's 100% possible. However, when I did that it was a ridiculous streak of good luck and bad bankroll management. I played with my entire stack the entire time. When I had enough to move up in stakes, I did with my entire roll. That was about 3 years ago on party poker. I withdrew all and had enough money for a decent down payment on my car.

I didn't get back into poker again until about a year ago.

Sure he can do it, but not in two months.
It might take 8-12 if he runs extremely, unbelievably well. God mode imo. Fergusson in 18 was it?
You might consider taking the weekend off. I realize you have probably have the most time to play on the weekends, and you have the two month goal, but it is very hard to win hands. At the micro levels most often the whole table is calling every blind and preflop raises which I'm pretty sure is what I see you complaining about up there. I've yet to figure out a way to combat the forces and have come to realize there might not be one other than to do other work, etc.

GL. :)
