How much money can you earn as a recreational poker player?

I could be very profitable player but I play only for fun and I am satisfied with small winnings.
Newcomer can win a large sum but success rate depends on too many factors

I already won US$500 playing as a recreational player. Of course it's rare af to this happen but you must study always to understand the game and become at least a good regular player.

The reason professionals make money has a lot to do with sponsorships and other side activities like coaching.

I agree. Poker is not a easy game to be profitable, even those people who study and pratice is hard in the beggining so is even harder to recreative players.

I don't think so.
On the one hand, newcomers are lucky... in any sphere.
On the other... poker is more difficult, too many factors influencing it: distance, time, luck, level of tournament \ cash, bankroll + personal "features" (strategy, easy tilting, self-confidence, time management to decision making and etc.)

I agree the newcomer can play good and win for several days or weeks, but the main question for poker is the distance, the ability to stop and to withdraw money back to your card)

I started playing again fairly regularly at the beginning of lockdown. I'm currently around $85 up. Various games on pokerstars and also a regular homegame there. The standard of the homegame is high in the main, probs tougher than most micro sit n goes I'd say, so a decent standard.

There has been no massive wins there to positively affect my bank roll. Just mostly a grind on sit n goes, and the home games.

There's no reason why a decent poker player can't win $100 per month, just playing micro sit n goes plus other tourneys. I'm certainly not the best player ever, just solid, and understand the basics well. I reckon I take around 80c per sit n go as an average at the moment, its not a large enough number of games to be sure yet tho.

it all depends on what platform you play on. with a more or less successful game, you can earn $ 10,000 a year.

Most micro players loose money. That’s how the professionals get their money.

That is the million dollar question. If you understand the game and the odds of the hands and you play smart and tight, you could win some decent cash. Keep in mind that luck is involved. I'd said 80 percent is skill, while 20 percent is luck in my opinion. You could win a large amount of cash, but the odds are against you. Keep playing and good luck going forward. I think that being a recreational player and not living on poker, if you have an income of 200-300 USD per month it is a great extra help and you also have fun playing. Cheers

No of course not. I’m pretty much a break even player, but to get to watch someone with a proven winning win rate would be great to see where I’m going wrong and try to learn from them. I have zero interest in become a pro, that’s just to much poker for me and to stressful, but earning 2 or 3 hundred bucks a month as rec player would be so cool.

No not at all. You misunderstood. The question was, how could you make...’, but I understood in a more general way as in,how much could someone win as a recreational player?
I said €400 because if you could do that part time/recreationally, it’s time to pay full time and make this your profession.
Question was a little vague and maybe I’m misunderstanding something but I’m a literal meaning that would be the maximum-ish someone could make before you would think that a living can be made out of this. For working class people anyway with the salary to match.

ohhhhh, maybe it was me that misunderstood the question. I thought the was question more like "how much do you make as a rec player" not "how much can you make as a rec player".

I won tournaments several times, getting from 200 to 500 dollars, but I'm not a professional player. Everyone has a chance if they play accurately.

I play very low sit and goes and freerolls ,so I win a little bit not much ,I should play normal tournements ,here I can win more ,but I have no time for this because I play to much freerolls ,in cash game I can not win why ? so I think I am a good player but not good enough to win realy and why should I risk much money to win more I am a hoby player

You have to separate if you're a cash player or a tournament player.
Your profit depends on your bankroll. If you play 100 tourneys and are an above average player , you should be able to get to the final table in a tournament with 500 ++ players,

If you end up top 3 you can.make a decent profit.

Interesting question , I think there are two types of recreational players , the ones who just play for fun and they are careless about the money and the buy ins , you can find them even in the biggest limits and those who treat the game very seriously and they can generate a good amount of money.

Personally I know some recreational players who earn decent amount of money($5000+/year) , they play whenever they have free time but they are very good players.But they study.

Of course they can!The whole poker industry has faced on Moneymakers success story and many other examples. I think everyone here wants to be another example. Winning a life changing trophy by playing cards?What a dream!

Noone... depend of day and game but usually i am gost going up few dollars then down few... it is more like hobby and passion then, place where i can earn money.
