For those who regularly grind late-night poker games, how has it affected your sleep cycle and health? What routines do you use to stay healthy while living on a nocturnal schedule? 😰

Sleep is very important in everyday life and staying healthy if that's what you're referring to.

I think playing poker at night can be quite difficult, especially if you play regularly late at night or early in the morning. Fatigue can affect not only concentration and decision making in the long run, but also the quality of sleep and overall well-being.

That's why I think it's important not to let poker disturb your sleep. It's a good idea to set a time limit for each game, take regular breaks, and avoid playing for long periods of time when you're already feeling tired. Relaxation is just as important to playing good poker as the right strategy.

Late-night poker definitely messes with my sleep, especially when I still have to get the kids to school in the morning and start work at 10 AM. With that schedule, playing regular long tournaments is almost impossible, so I usually stick to shorter turbo events and call it a night earlier. I’ve also found that cutting caffeine late in the session and keeping a consistent wake-up time helps a lot, even if I didn’t get enough sleep. It’s definitely a trade-off between grinding more and actually feeling healthy the next day.

I play in the morning and afternoon, I rarely play at night. I think it's very important to have a moment of rest for your body and mind. At night I focus on doing things from my personal routine and resting, waking up early to start the games.

I agree very much to that. Sometimes it can be easy to get sucked in and keep playing a game even when you are tired. This is probably where your decisions may start becoming worse. Having a cutoff point where you must stop is definitely something I need to work on. Good sleep is probably just as important as practicing the game itself. šŸ˜…

Yeah, that’s a tough schedule. Trying to balance poker, kids, and work definitely makes those long late-night sessions difficult. I like the idea of sticking to shorter tournaments and keeping a consistent wake-up time though. At some point, you have to choose between getting in another tournament and actually being functional the next day šŸ˜‚

NI don't usually play at night, but when matches end close to bedtime, it takes me a long time to fall asleep because of the adrenaline, and it takes a while to calm down.

I think poker can definitely affect your sleep, especially when tournaments run late. Sometimes you want to keep playing because you're doing well, but the next day you can feel tired and struggle to focus. I think it's important to balance poker with enough sleep and take breaks when needed.

I actually find poker helps me stay awake during night shifts. I think it’s partly the dopamine and the fact that you’re constantly making decisions and staying mentally engaged. Obviously I only play when things are quiet and it doesn’t interfere with work, but it definitely keeps my brain more alert than just watching TV or scrolling on my phone.

How most freerolls are timewise/timezonewise, Poker has effected my sleep and health negatively. I do wish I can build bank soon enough with them so I can cut some of them out.

Worth adding: fatigue doesn't hit your play evenly. The first thing to go isn't hand reading - it's your willingness to fold. You keep playing your usual ranges, but you stop doing the effortful stuff: checking effective stacks, noticing the nit just 3bet you, taking four more seconds on a river call. Auto-pilot is loose-passive by default.

So you don't feel bad while playing badly. The tell is behavioural: stopped taking notes, opened one more table than planned, insta-called a river - you're already past +EV.

A hand-count limit beats a time limit, too. Time limits get renegotiated at 2am.

I think playing late at night can definitely mess with your sleep, especially if you play for several hours. I try not to make it a habit and prefer playing when I’m rested. If I do play at night, I take breaks and try to stop before I’m too tired, because once you lose focus, your decisions get worse too.

I don't think it's healthy for you to play poker every night; doing it once in a while is normal, but playing every day is bad for your health.

I used to play sometimes, late at night, now I don't, because I felt that it affected me mentally and physically.
