Unfortunately there are no short cuts in poker (for most of us anyways). If you can afford to lose it/or the losing of it doesn't bother you much, then the odd spin up is ok. I did it once and spun $35 into $1600 in 6 weeks. But you gonna have to start to discipline yourself in this area or your gonna be posting ITT again about another blow up. BRM is probably one of the most important facets of poker.

I can't agree with this more. I have no problems when I am on a good roll and making profit. I always run into trouble when I run bad. Now that I am starting over from the bottom, I will focus much more on those times that I am running bad instead of just imploding.

I have been playing better lately. Had my best finish in a CC buy-in last night (6th for $16.90). Hopefully I have learned to be more disciplined with what I have.

Can I start playing real poker at 10nl or should I keep on playing my super-nit 10/9 style? :)

After a couple hundred hands it's obvious that a tight style is best as always. I have noticed though that the players are looser in a way. By that I mean they are more willing to part with cash post-flop. I've faced quite a bit of aggression post-flop only for them to fold to a shove.

Overall I like it, it's not either mentalist or rock, something in between. In a way they are better but still with huge leaks, leaks that seem more profitable.

Oh and fish are fish still, only they has more cash.

Ohhh... and I agree 100%!!! I just needed to get it off my chest... and I feel much better about the situation now! I'm more frustrated at myself for breaking my BRM and doing what I did... I promised myself that I wouldn't do this and was doing so well at keeping that.....
Once the Holidays are over I'll get back to it. Until then I'm going to play some freerolls, MW2 and read read read read read..... Once I feel comfortable after the holidays I'm going to make a deposit if I haven't built up a bankroll and get things going uphill again.

As odd as it sounds Jagsti... thanks for your post... I find words of encouragement and it helps :).

BRM is about having a plan. You have a bankroll, then you plan what stakes you gonna play and how many tables. If you feel your winning at that level, then move up. Always have a safeguard in the plan, if you lose too many buy ins b/c of variance, bad play or you can't beat that level yet, then move down and presevre your roll.

Most ppl underestimate variance, seriously it can be horrendous. If you've ever run bad, then times that by 100 and you may have some inkling about variance. Poker is about the long term, but most of you will never play enough hands to even out the variance, unless you play a lot. I've played 100k hands were I've been a winner at 100nl for 4ptbb, I've had 100k hands at break even and I've had 100k hands were I've lost a shit load. Just grind it out, keep studying and DO NOT GO BROKE!

QFT !!!

The last 90k+ hands have been just downright brutal for me. Last night alone I was set over setted 3 times, had AA dealt to me once (and only once) that ran into a set and ran K high flush into A high flush.

I had enough and took all my money off full tilt.

I know that I'm a decent poker player. I know it's all about the long run, but I also know that I have a hard time dealing with the swings.

Amen

Frankly, I think it's a pretty easy argument that it IS the most important facet.

One thing important is to learn your own limits. For example, I am a loose player on the table, so I tend to counter this with tighter BRM.

I see you are using the euro account TB, I guess the tracking programs are all ready to go on those tables? Thinking of moving half my money to euros to have greater selection of games. I guess its just as easy to transfer it back to dollars but there's the 1% fee every time, so don't want to do that often.

Not really. BRM is irrelevant for the majority of players. It only applies to players for whom playing poker is actually +EV. Most players are not.

For most people, the most important facet of poker is budgeting your losses properly.

A losing player playing with BRM is giving him self time to turn into a winning player...

Well if we are going to pick nits I'd say "budgeting for losses" IS BRM. :D

However, I was operating under the assumption that we would all require the hypothetical player to be profitable as the common notions of BRM (X buyins) are meaningless to the losing player.

But yeah. It's a valid nit to pick. Understanding what winning is - is also important.

I'm serious as I have seen players who obviously lose consistently claim to be winners.

"BRM" for losing players is an entirely different thing than BRM for winners. A losing player has to figure what he aims to achieve when playing poker.

If he plays because he enjoys the game, he needs to decide how much time he wants to play per month, how much money he's willing to lose and the risk he's willing to accept regarding these two variables in order to decide the stakes he can afford to play.

If the losing player's aim is to try to make money, on the other hand, he should set a target amount where he'll call it quits if he wins that much, than his optimal strategy is to play as little as possible at the highest stakes possible in order to maximize his variance, because variance is the only thing that can make -EV players profit, and only in the short term.

If his goal is to try to become a winning player, he needs to factor in educational tools (books, software) into his budget and balance that with how much he learns at the different stakes and how much he can afford to invest in the hope of becoming good enough to beat the game.

BRM for the winning player is much easier, tbh. Just figure out your winrate, your variance, than choose an acceptable risk of ruin and there you go.

I don't see how the game would be very fun at all if you lost overall.

I suppose the occasional "big win" is what keeps losing players going.

I am glad they keep going.

Imo the concept is similar to the people who play the same lottery numbers every week (or every day in some cases). They keep playing every time holding on to the notion that one day their numbers will be picked. Even if they win once, they consider themselves a winning player, although in the long run it costs them much more than they will ever win.

budgeting your losses = bankroll management system, imo

how has everyone been?

i just recently moved to Cake poker with a relatively small BR to play some 10NL and other games when I feel like it. I finally have rakeback, and that site is extremely soft. I LOVE IT! I actually enjoy playing without the HUD.

I personally hope they never allow HUD there, and I haven't noticed any problems with the software... it has my recommendation!

Every now and again, I just get so fed up playing poker. Cannot be bothered playing today, didn't play sun. Think I've only missed like maybe 4-5 days playing since the 1st week in september. Hope I don't feel like this too much next year, otherwise I can kiss SNE goodbye.

Was hoping to get the 300k milestone bonus before the year end, but that's prolly not possible now, sigh!

Man up!

Get your grind on, you probably will feel like this next year alot since you will be playing alot more volume and alot more consecutive days. You will have to force yourself to play when you dont want to play if you are chasing SNE, I know all the stuff about dont play when you dont feel in the correct frame of mind but tbh I dont think those concepts apply when your chasing SNE.

300k Milestone man just think of the $$$'s ;)

The first was the very last hand of last nights session. Don't you love taking a stack as you're closing tables?
To explain, it's 6-max obviously, button was re-rasing quite light and with the othe rplayers call I didn't put him on JJ+, maybe AQ/AJ but i'm ok with that with fold equity and having the pair. I shoved to take it down pre-flop really but I liked the call :)

No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (6 handed) - Hold'em Manager Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Button ($19.53)
SB ($3.67)
BB ($8.66)
Hero (UTG) ($10.60)
MP ($6.79)
CO ($10)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 10

Hero bets $0.40, 2 folds, Button raises $1.35, 1 fold, BB calls $1.25, Hero raises $10.20 (All-In), 1 fold, BB calls $7.31 (All-In)

Hero had 10

Outcome: Hero won $19.42

The second is a little more interesting. Obviously I think my pair is good on flop and turn but how often am I beat on the river. I'm thinking I can't fold to every scare card on the river, especially overcards though there is the straight. Good call or is it one of those where if i'm right I look like god and if i'm wrong I look like a spewtard?
