women are on a even playing field when it comes to poker, a game of intelligence and experience. poker is not a physical sport which relies on athleticism. most of the best players are male simply because most players are male. there are a couple of female regulars in some of the online games i play that i respect as much as the good male regulars.

I believe you mean physical strength and not athleticism which has no gender bias.

athleticism (uncountable)
  1. the state of being an athlete, or of taking part in athletic events
  2. a show of athletic prowess (in ballet etc)

Girls aren't handicapped in the game of poker. I play against a girl the same way I play anyone else. Why wouldn't I. I am not embarrassed to get beat by a girl. For all I know she plays better than me. I believe girls definately have an equal opportunity to win at poker.

Actually some guys pretend to be girls in online games, because they believe that people go easier on girls. From what some ladies have said in this thread, that might well be a false assumption. :dontknow:

I don't discriminate, I assume everyone at the table is a donk until they show otherwise. When they show otherwise, I adjust and it doesn't matter if they're black/white/male/female/whatever. On another note though there is this great player at 200nl FR who would start tables and play shorthanded and leave when the tables filled. The player was just extremely solid and aggro and it got to the point where I wouldn't play the player unless there was another fish at the table. Found out recently through their blog that it's actually a middle-aged female. Doesn't change anything.

That said though, as a generality males are better at math and logic, thus the average male will probably be a bit better at poker. But also I've heard that since so many guys play it casually and for fun and that females always feel pressured to do well that the average female player is probably better than the average male player just because the ones who do play are the ones who will actually work a bit to get good as opposed to most guys who just play to have fun in a social atmosphere. So yeah when I see a girl sit I assume she's a fish just like when I see a guy sit. But if they show they can play there's no discriminating, I just treat them like any other poker player and adjust to how they play.

My personal opinion is that men are intimidated by women on the live circuit at least. I think online is a different ballgame completely though. But there are still many good players and my favorite female player is Jennifer Harman.

Oh also speaking of female players, look at Annette_15. She won the WSOPE ME I'm pretty sure before she was even 21 and in general owns online as well.

Girls can play as good of a poker as Man do but the problem is that there is less girls interested so deeply into the game as man are. To become a top poker player you really have to have a deep understanding of this game and you wont get there unless you constantly analyze your game and put in a lot and i mean A LOT of time to playing and reviewing your actions. GIRLS just dont tend to get as deep into this game (except some of them , A. DUKE, J. HARMAN etc) But probably even those female players dont get as deep into it as some of the top MALE players..It's just a thing.. Same with gaming.. There is less females playing games then males so statisticly you will always have better players from the bigger sample.. If you only have 1,000 females playing poker and you got 1,000,000 males playing poker obviously the chances that there will be more top male players is higher because of the difference in the amount of players...

My wife plays poker with me.. but she never gets as deep into the game as i do.. she wont read any books she wont read articles , she does it for plain fun but she plays almost everyday with me on pokerstars..

I agree that women naturally tend to be more patient and therefore tend to do well in tournaments.

I find players do tend to try and bully me, so occassionally you have to throw in a huge bluff and show it just so they back off (sometimes works!)

I admire Annette Ob. just because she is so aggressive- think thats why she tends to do so well as players cant believe a female would reraise with nothing, so tend to fold.

Being of the superior sex has advantages and disadvantages, but ultimately dont think it matters that much - if you know what you're doing and play sensibly then you tend to do well, otherwise you dont (generally!!)

fancy a headsup Marvinas?

I like playing the ladies, assuming that they actually are ladies, simply because they have manners. There's also alot of guys who use female pictures, avatars and names simply because they figure the guys will take it easier on them.

I was playing with a girl the other day that had a mans avatar. She said that she gets more respect as a man. I play a woman just like I would play a man. The only difference when it comes to poker players is how they know about the game.

I would say women can play poker just as well as men, sex doesn't matter in this game. Some women are aggressive some are not, same as men. Mind you some men play differently against women, whether they think they can bully them, or figuring if they let them win, they may get some outside action, who knows. The only reason you see men winning more tournaments thatn women is currently more men play than women so statistically the men will prevail. But more and more women are picking up the game. And anybody that says women can't play obviously have never heard of Jen Harman, Annie Duke or any of the many pro players.

My avatar on Pokerstars is a 'female' name,... in hopes that some of the other males on the table will play back at me. I've actually also used it to my advantage when my stack has gotten small in tourneys when bubble is approaching (etc.) and find with a few 'nice' comments, some of my male opponents seem to not mind giving me a walk, lol (my perception anyways.... maybe it's just that they're afraid that I'll play back at them with some uber aggression,... and fealessly pull some shoveaments).

I'd hate to generalize about how one gender may play in comparison to the other.. but.. my findings if they're faily new to poker,.. males will overplay their hands and be too aggressive at the wrong times, females seem to call perhaps a bit too often (when perhaps they should be raising or folding). This is way too much of a generalization though.... perhaps another way to put it would be... one's playing style often reflects one's character and to play aggressively is sometimes out of character for some people, so basically they have to work at playing against what their natural tendencies would be telling them to do (ie., "can't we just check it down and hopefully my hand will beat your's?"). If a female player is raising my bet, I'd have to admit I will tend to give it ALOT more respect.

These statements are based on fairly newbie 'online' players and are just a very generalized opinion (or maybe I should say 'observation').

I dont think that's the only reason.. Like i said above man tend to get deeper into the game then females do.. Not because we are made that way, it's because majority of females dont care about getting that deep into the game. How many female poker players do you have with such deep understanding of poker like Chris Ferguson, Sklansky, Allan Cunningham, Daniel Negreanu etc.. I can list many more names out there...

I find it simply normal to see girls playing poker!!
It's the same than girls playing video games. At first, some people could be surprised to see girls loving video games, and in my country, it has became something usual, and I think it's the same for poker :)
It's a fun game, I think it's simply normal that girls love poker too :)
And I think maybe their kind of play is a bit more conservative than boys play, but also, maybe much smart ;)

I enjoy playing women at the tables.I keep it real simple,I will continuation bet after flop and if I get called I try to check it down without a monster. If I get raised I fold without nutz or a monster draw.I think it has saved me alot of money. Im sure there are better strategys, but this has worked well for me against females.GL at the tables ladies, you are welcome in my book.

I definatley get crushed by them live... The good ones.. I have since learned my lesson and avoid them live. Online they dont get to me as much.. But a girl has a huge advantage in a live game if they know what they are doing. Especially if they are hot.

i was looking at a video at pokertube
and one of the guys said
the % of females to males is higher at the end of a tournament than at the begining
so what does that tell you
what tournament?

also, it puts me more on tilt when a girl sucks out and beats me rather than a guy

I think there are two reasons to why there are more male pros, than female pros.
1. There are more men playing the game.
2. Women tend to chose family and friends over poker more often than men do. That doesnt make them worse poker players, but it makes it more difficult to find time, and to clear your head from everything else than poker.

Try this experiment:
Write down a number of questions about your early childhood, then ask your parents to answer them seperately. Chances are your mother will be able to give you the most comprahensive answer.

I love the fact that women are taking a bigger role in poker nowadays. Many women are exceptional at the game and do better than many men. I don't see why it is a big deal, other than the fact that the husbands no longer get a night away from the wives :)
