poker is a place to make friends and they are just opponents.

Friends in poker

Hello, yes poker is a world wide room where you can meet people from all over the globe and make friendships through it. I have made 5 and i am proud of them as my friends. Opponents in the game but true friends in real life.

Yeah man, agree, except, not always the best wins. (I won plenty times, and i am far from best...) it is like real life, everybody are opponents, trying to beat you, destroy, relegate you from life, game, meantime making profit on you...

Anyway, generally think friendship is an empty word in this world, but in poker it is even more like that... otherwise, good for us, there are individuals, whose think like this.

how life is a war, poker, too.

Considering that I only ever play online poker making friends is really not in the cards :). I gravitate more to making friends in person, and not so much online. When I play poker online its all about just playing poker. Yes I may chat with some friendly people at the table and I really enjoy that. Perhaps on this forum over enough time and chit-chat I may make a friend or 2 here but who knows :p.

In poker you become friends and enemies hahaha this because at the table you only have yourself as an ally without stopping concentrating but even so in breaks you get to have time to talk for a while with your tablemates and from there one gets to become friends.

Of course it is, let's not forget that it's just a game and should be treated as such :)there is a chance to make some money yes, but again for you to win, someone has to lose, so today you win tomorrow the person against which you have won, for example, but that doesn't make them enemies, they are simply players you can befriend:)

I don't need friends to play poker, I need money. Therefore, I consider everyone present at the table primarily as opponents.

I don't have many friends but I have some and I don't like playing poker with friends. For me, it is not a social activity or gambling. It is my job to take other people's money away from them and I do not do that to friends. If anything, it makes me feel guilty and I don't want to feel guilty. I do play with friends for chips. When we will all be milionaires and afford to win or lose what we have, then sure, but I've got a long way ahead.

Possible

It is possible to make friends in online games -
I have done so in other RP adventure games, online

But, on poker sites I just focus on the game and don't chat.

so, I seldom interact with the same person
frequently enough to form a friendship

Your fellow opponent should be an "enemy" at the table but can befriend away from the table. I would state you can make friends online by being an active member of Twitch Poker Streamer community or radio broadcast of online MTTs.

I always said it, it's a game where you can meet a lot of people and make friends, but there are times when you can get angry because of bad hands, but that's normal, that shouldn't affect the way you make friends that you can learn from.

They are your opponents in poker, but they are not your opponents in your life, so, nothing very difficult to make friends on poker table

wherever you meet people you can find friends. But you mustn't let the game affect whether you're playing against strangers or friends. I've met a lot of people in poker and I now call some my friends, but when I play poker I don't know them, I only know my cards and the goal of winning. However, winning is something that doesn't really want to work out at the moment, but my time will come again lol

I have many many people that I like and respect at cardschat. many of them are hated at the poker table.
poker hate, not really any animosity off the table but the feeling that they will destroy you unless you get them first on the table,
depends on their style.
some friends I am not out to destroy, I want to win against them but do not go out of my way to make moves against them,
just a little more straightforward. right or wrong that's my way. ;)

I love making friends at the poker table. Some of the coolest people I've met in life were met thru poker.

You're right that when the game is on it's important to see them as opponents and not softplay them (can cost you big winnings if you do).

But much like sports where players are grateful that you give your best and force them to bring out the best in themselves, poker players are grateful when you do the same.

Great question jfofla! :D
thank you sir :p

softplay will indeed come back to haunt you. they will come back and win the game.
you help bring out the best in all of us <3 <3

What is a friend?

It is simply a person with whom you share some sort of bond or affection, but generally not of a sexual nature and not family.

As a result, my friends typically tend to be poker players. But I will also go out and play golf with some of them...or boardgames with others...but generally I play poker with all of them.

I do not get the "don't play poker with friends" point of view. That is exactly the sort of folks I want to play with. We can talk poker, on and off-table. We can do hand reviews and share intel... But there is never any long lasting bad feelings between us over poker. We are ALL playing to WIN...and each has a different approach. But as long as you aren't playing like a douchebag, a friendship should never be harmed by competition.

The problems come out when you start trash talking...or time-wasting...or looking at mucked cards...or slow rolling...or a myriad of other dick-moves. So don't do it. Treat people with respect and you can take their money all day.

If you like making friends playing poker, I suggest you join the Cards Chat League. There you'll come across the same 30 or so folks each week. You'll become familiar with each of their (ever-changing) styles...and the chat is easy and friendly.

I cannot wait for next season's league to start up and get to know a new bunch of players.

So, I cannot help but wonder that, if you cannot maintain a friendship and compete at the same time, one of you is probably a douchebag (e.g. a sore loser or a terrible winner). fix that bit...and there are millions of potential friends out there...

Cheers,
JT
we are playing freerolls  change that to big money and you have a different dynamic.
your list of dick moves has a few I disagree with
I often check replay to see mucked cards, I need that info for future play.
I understand that in live poker where you may embarrass the losing player but online no one knows it.
trash talk, nothing wrong with some trash talk among friends as long the intent is friendly competition.

no doubt, although you are not supposed to play with money you cannot afford to lose,
we are gamblers and many do it often. it can often lead to hurt feelings.

:rofl: we have so many, WTF are they thinking ;) no real concept of what the game is about and no real desire to learn. it's a freeroll

You misunderstand.
Looking at replay is fine.
What I mean is that it is reprehensible, when playing live, to reach into the muck and retrieve cards and then look/show them.
Once there, they are dead and there is a significant risk of grabbing different cards than were mucked (or someone else's cards).
THAT really pisses me off.
Cheers,
JT

Poker is life, everybody wants to win!

The way you handle your life (ego and aggression) is how you handle Poker.
