Hello community,

Before poker, I viewed money quite differently.

Losing a small amount bothered me a lot. But after playing poker for a while, I realized that variance, risk, and emotional control started to change the way I make decisions, even outside the tables.

At the same time, poker also taught me that not every bad result means a bad decision. Because we can improve from those.

I think that mentality helped me to be calmer in some situations... but sometimes it also made me think too much about everything

Has poker also changed the way you approach money, risk, or decision-making in real life?

Yes, definitely. Poker changed the way I think about decisions and outcomes. One of the biggest lessons is understanding that a good decision can still lead to a bad result, and a bad decision can sometimes get rewarded. That mindset applies to real life more than people realize.
It also taught me to be more patient with money and less emotional about short-term swings. But like you said, there’s a downside too — sometimes you start analyzing every situation like it’s a poker hand and overthinking probabilities or risks that don’t need that much calculation.

I have been gambling for many years and during this long time I have come to understand and appreciate the importance of playing disciplined and bankroll management. Poker has really positively influenced my attitude towards money, and this in turn has positively influenced my personal life.

After starting to play poker, I began to realize the need to manage my money better in general. I started organizing my salary and family expenses.

Poker is just a hobby for me, but playing the game has taught me valuable lessons about patience, choosing the right moment to attack or defend, and handling bad luck. Luck doesn’t always stay on your side, even when you’re in a good position.... :coffee:

I don't think poker changed my life much overall, but it may have helped me deal better with small losses and risks. Before, I think any loss bothered me more. Playing poker, I began to notice that sometimes you do the right thing and still get a poor result. Maybe I absorbed some of that from poker into real life too, but I'm not sure if it actually happened, lol.

Poker teaches that life is not perfect all the time, it is bets after another. Sometimes you win and sometimes you loose, but it only matters how your game play is in the long run. One must accept temporary risk as only long-term matters eventually.

Does poker change the way you think about money?

Yes, poker significantly changes the attitude towards money, transforming it from a means of consumption into a working tool.

I think that, regarding money, I've always had a bit of the mindset that poker demands.

One difference I notice is that in poker I feel confident to try and I don't blame myself as much for mistakes as in other areas of my life. In poker, I know that, in the long run, everything will work out (if I do the right thing), but in other areas I don't have that confidence. My personality isn't ideal for a poker player because I don't like taking risks, etc. But at a poker table, it's okay, because I know that sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and the important thing isn't the risk, but whether the decision is the right one. If it is, it might cost me my life in the tournament, but that's okay, because it was what I had to do, and the only consequence is that I'm out.

That could be a life lesson, but it's been difficult to apply. In poker, things are a little clearer (and in poker things are far from clear).

Nothing has changed for me, because even if I wanted to, I don't know how to deposit at a poker room, once I tried and the bank blocked my card.

Has poker changed the way you look at money?

Yes - due to poker I've learned a lot about bankroll management and how to do things both for poker and for other IRL areas to avoid the risk of going broke...for example I never thought about tracking my IRL spending before learning different steps for poker bankroll management and using a budgeting App (the mobile phones nowadays, especially on Android devices, makes things so much easier/convenient), to review where my money goes, so I can easily cut dead-weight subscriptions and mindless spending...

If there's one thing I've learned about poker lately, it's that overconfidence betrays you, that you shouldn't underestimate anyone; this is a duel of minds, like a game of chess.

Yes, poker definitely changes the way you view money.
You start thinking more in terms of expected value, risk, and long-term results rather than short-term emotions.
Big swings become more normal, and bankroll management teaches discipline.
It also helps separate decision quality from immediate outcomes.
Over time, poker makes you more patient and analytical about money overall.

It used to be for me too, but today I see it as second income, and I want to make poker my main income. But I understand that as a hobby, it doesn't influence real life.

You come to understand that it's foolish to blame circumstances or bad luck for failure—any financial decision you make is made by you personally based on incomplete information.

I haven't really thought about it yet, but I think it definitely had an impact on me. When you sit down to play an MTT, you have a certain amount of chips (a bankroll you can spend). This essentially applies to the amount of real-life money you have. I think it definitely had an impact on me, and that's why I'm able to handle money responsibly.

Yes, it has completely changed. Before, if I needed to buy something like a bath towel, I would buy any one, not caring about the price. Nowadays, I do a cost-benefit analysis for any item, researching prices from different places to find the lowest price for the same product I want.

I'm a lot calmer when dealing with loss compared to the time before I started playing poker. That applies to financial losses and non-financial. I'm not sure if it's just a change in maturity or even if it was primarily influenced by poker.
