Depends on the person, as everything, if you see it as a "payable job" you need skills to make money out of it. If you do it for socialize, having fun, it's a ver good hobbie!

I started like a hobby and can be in time a source of money....You must know your limits.......In poker you can win 1000 $ just with work but you can lose 1000 $ very fast and easy by makind mistakes.

For me both. I love the game, but to be honest, after playing online for 16 years I don't think I would play much if it was just for play money. I don't win much, but being on a fixed income any amount helps.

I guess it all starts as a hobby... Regardless the reason why you started playing for the first time. But as time goes by, you may find out the you've got enough skills to make a living from it. Of course it's not easy, and neither it is the wish of many... But for sure it becomes profitable as you study and practice in regular bases

There's nothing more relaxing and exciting than playing a good game of poker. It's also so exhilarating and a huge rush to take down a massive pot. So I must say both.

expectations...

I think that the person who spends the most time in poker should be a professional player and generate high expectations, which is not the case for me, since I don't have enough time for my work and for this occasion I would consider it a hobby, but if this hobby gives me profit, welcome. Who knows in the future, when I am an older adult I spend more time on this beautiful game and I am a successful winner.

Playing to win?

Playing to win, hmmm. Don't we play all games to win, Scrabble, Chess, Dominoes, Poker? I'm not a professional, not making a living at it, but I did play professionally back in the nineties. Always traveling. Paid for my pilot training and bought an airplane off of poker winnings. Was more convenient and enjoyable than commercial flying and driving. The downside was I missed a good part of my kids growing up. Missed a lot of their school plays and sports events. There was always a poker tournament or a game I had to be at. Wish I could get the time back because I think I'd do it differently.

Now I play online and am winning but not enough to make a living at it. Part of the reason is I don't need to make a living at it. To make a living at it you always have to be hustling. And I'm now careful to live a balanced life among family and friends. Recently went to see my daughter-in-law graduate with her Masters Degree from USC.

On my death bed I'll remember her graduation, but I doubt I'll remember a single poker game I played.

I play for 12 years already. For this time I won about $ 1,500 maybe less and only God knows how much minimum $10 deposit I lost. God and Poker Stars.

I think anyone who says he’s just playing for a hobby and doesn’t want to win is not telling the truth. We play every game to win. Whether you can win money or buttons in a game, we want to win it because that’s how we’re coded. And that's very okay.

Anyone who plays poker is by nature competitive and likely wants to improve their game - that's why we all have arrived on this forums. So, in one sense we all aim for the win.

That said, I am happy to make it past the bubble, to reach a final table let alone win a tourney. I can take great delight in playing one hand really well and I think this shows (hopefully) I have a healthy attitude to the game.

What attracted me to poker (a game which came at me in a circuitous manner) was the mental aspect of the game - how people weathered the inevitable ups and downs, the bad beats whilst playing correctly. That fascinated me above all else and I thought was by definition a 'life lesson'.

Even though many times people have not believed me on this, money or any financial gain was a secondary issue to me when I first became hooked on poker. Yes, my thinking has developed and evolved but at core, it's still 'the love of the game'.

Thats the thing I struggle with. I feel like I am good enough to put major time into poker although I cant succinctly define what "good enough" means or why I think because I have taken down some decent tourneys that I think that means anything other than "you gotta get lucky sometimes".

But I have found that since I have taken playing more seriously I get caught between having fun and pushing the limits of "gambling". In pots and situations that I know I should fold I find myself calling because of reasons that are not conducive to being a good poker player. Also cutting down on distraction when playing online have been a chore. Trying to keep myself from doing things I wouldnt be able to do in a live game like full on watching youtube videos, online shopping or reading the news. I think if I can curb those things I would consider fully jumping into it but until then I cant say "Im Ready!"

I believe if you put the two together it would be a good advantage. If you just think of poker as a way to make money, your game may not be as good.

hooby or professional

you dont need to choose anyone, if you really like but dont wanna be professional you can and if you dont so its ok too. I like to think in any round like an professional but Im far way to be one.
