Seriously, two week ban if I don't make it. Or like a month or something. Have fun with it, I need some motivation.

what exactly are the 'big' perks for SN again?

Mainly the 3.5 fpp/vpp ratio, plus being able to concierge shit. Mainly the first though. Basically with sn at 200nl you're being paid 2.8c/hand where at platinum you're getting paid 2c/hand. Since I play ~1000 hands/hour that means sn gives me $28/hand instead of $16/hand at gold or $20/hand at platinum just for breaking even not including milestone bonuses (yes I'm crazy, going for 200k vps this year total, wanna get that milestone bonus).

Which means the more he plays the more he makes, so even if sn isn't the motivation, playing more = +++++++++life ev.

There's only one way to find out. Play like a 10k hand session one day :p.

Chuck's just gonna end up adding more tables just to get to SN (it's not like he's going to stop going out with friends for the sake of SN - in which case that would still be lame, because life is more important than some silly VIP program), and will probably end up missing a lot of +EV spots, which will detriment his overall game. That's one thing Stars does to people, it makes them think way too much about rakeback (Oh well, I broke even for the session, but with FPPs, I made $300, which is a sick hourly! - Rather than - I broke-even, probably because I missed a bunch of spots. Let me rethink what I did in my session, so that when I'm playing 5/10, these spots will be automatic for me.) Obviously, if you're just being lazy, you should definitely play more, but don't do it because of some gimmick, do it because you feel like you can play your A+ game and have no reason not to play.

Seriously, if you're on a huge upswing like that, just keep doing what you're doing, and think about minor things like VIP programs after you feel you're tapering off. Then again, this is more Tommy Angelo perspective than pure math and EV and $/hr.

Well put and I think it basically comes down to that. I dunno, real life is pretty busy right now, but not to the extent that I couldn't plug 20k hands in a month.

You guys have motivated me to play a nice long session later tonight after I finish some RL shit.

Zach that should read $28/hr not /hand.

Personally I like the VIP programme and the rewards it brings. If I just wanted to play a fishy site, then I certainly wouldn't be playing Stars, I would be playing Party Poker imo.

But along with the whole package that Stars has, I just prefer playing there. I like to play a lot of poker, and the fact that Stars rewards me with a decent rakeback (Fpps) then all the better. Also if I go for SNE then there's not much out there that's better than that imo.

Ya but I think what vanq is saying is that if you're sacrificing improvement as a player (or at least sacrificing a much higher rate of improvement) for vip status and the minor perks that come with it, you're taking the more -EV line.

It's hard making these statements after only a few thousand hands (30k), but I think I can honestly say that moving to 6max and dropping the number of tables I was playing was easily the biggest catalyst to my improvement, ever.

Tonight's 'long' session btw :):

I'm talking time though. I don't know how many tables you play, but at 6max that "long session" couldn't have been longer than an hour right? Unless you were tired/busy/whatever else, playing an extra 2 hours today gives you:

1. better shot at higher vip status
2. more income, assuming you can still play winning poker
3. improvement, since the more you see situations, think them out, and play them, the better you'll get.

Now obviously (hopefully you realize I'm kidding) I'm kidding with the bum comments, but in all seriousness I'm not saying you should up it to like 20 tables of 6max (in fact that could be all but impossible), but just keep with the same number of tables and play a bit longer. Obviously don't listen to me since I don't know about your life, but from what I understood poker was your primary income and you didn't have a ton of obligations. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm just surprised someone as good as you is playing basically for a living and only putting in under an hour/day on average.

No offense taken about the bum thing, because that's exactly what I am right now. I have two main problems that keep me from playing more. One is that I have shit at home that keeps me occupied for the whole day, in a way. The other is my laziness, plain and simple.

The thing is that it's not like I have 5 hours of stuff to do at home, so I get it all done as soon as I wake up, then I have the rest of the day off for poker. It's all scattered and comes up randomly sometimes. My oma moved in with us so I have to constantly check to make sure she's good, plus I have to walk my dog for a good hour every day. Making meals (for both her and I) and eating doesn't seem like much, but when you're culinarily handicapped as I am, it tends to take a good chunk of the day to prepare stuff. I feel I play much better when I sit down and get a good feel for the dynamic at my tables and play a good ~hour+ session. I don't think I could stand playing in spurts of 15 minutes and shit, it's just too scattered. It could also be that my time management is just really bad, who knows.

Anyways you're absolutely right that I could plug a million more hands a month. I should definitely be playing more daily, it's just hard getting into the routine. The heavy multitabling & vip line vs the fewer tables/lag/improvement line is a different argument, I thought that's what we were discussing. Buy ya, you can see why I keep saying I envy you guys who go to school/have full time jobs and still manage to have the work ethic to plug in a million hands monthly. I just don't know how you do it.

Oh, another point is table selection. Game selecting for me is half the process now - it's not 'look for the highest plrs/flop and open as many tables as you can', it's using telescope to search for the tables where I have the most/worst fish, and I have position on them. Often times I'm only at 1-2 tables for a good 1/2 hour.

Again no offense, but I'd like to quote letherass:

letherass said:
I think most people that have poor work ethics are making things more complicated than they need to be. It's pretty simple; JUST WORK HARDER. There is no trick to it. If you aren't tired by the end of the day then you need to keep working

I think this was from his well at 2+2.

It's about choices. I've got x hours of the day filled with stuff I have to get done, and the rest I choose. I pick what I want to get done and then I do it. There's no secret to it, you just go and get it done. Now if you really do have stuff around the house that prevents you from playing poker a lot I apologize, as again I have no insight as to your home life and apart from classes/homework/baseball I don't have a ton of obligations. But if you have a hard time playing, just out of being lazy and not wanting to do it, it's because you're making a choice. You're the only one who gets to decide whether or not to do it, and if you don't you're the one making the choice. It's that simple. Either you want to do it or you don't. And if you don't that's fine, but then you deal with the consequences.

Again sorry if it seems I'm trying to put you down, I'm really not and I admire your poker ability. But this is sort of my entire outlook on life. If you want something you've gotta work for it. If you really want something, you've gotta give it your all, 100% effort every day. You've said before your dream is to play poker full time. If you really want it you should be doing the best that you can to improve.

So again, I don't know about your personal life and I don't want to assume anything, but if you look at yourself in the mirror and think that you are being lazy and could be working harder at poker, there's a pretty simple answer to it. All I can say is that if I had your poker ability, a dream of playing full time, and no job I would be doing whatever it took to put in hands and get better, and make some money. If you really want it, it's in your hands. If you're not giving your all it's obviously not that important to you. You're the only one who can make that choice. That's all I'm trying to say.

alright, so no supernova tonight, gotta get up earlyish tomorrow morning, got our fall double-header tomorrow (NCAA regulations, we're only allowed one game against another school in the fall. I don't know if it's one day or one game, but we either play 2 9-inning games or one 18-inning game depending on wording ;)). Should be fun. We're looking good too and we're not playing a great team, so we definitely should win it. Anyway, sleep, baseball all tomorrow, and maybe supernova tomorrow night, although I've got a shitload of hw to get done and am busy Sunday (baseball, "field trip", live poker) so I'm gonna make sure I get my work done before playing any poker tomorrow.

Just busted out of the $50k Supernova freeroll in 49th place for $110. Quite pleased with that as I was short stacked for like ages before the bubble, and for ages after it. Always around 1/2 avg stack. Also cashed for small change in the $20k freeroll as well. Maybe donkaments are my new niche..... I don't think so!
