I have been playing poker for many years. I started playing tournaments, with micro buy-ins. When I realized that I was only losing money, I tried to switch to cash games, and started losing even more and even faster. Therefore, the question naturally arose, how to do it so that at least stop losing money. The answer was found by itself. The answer: "play freerolls". Tournaments with micro buy-ins are very similar to freerolls, so I focused all my attention on them.

I honestly like both. Both are the game but different. The challenge of a tournament, fighting through a large field and trying to beat everyone is fascinating. Playing cash and having the freedom to come and leave or play several tables at the same time (at least online) is a different aspect of poker.

I’ve played both cash games and tournaments, but I definitely prefer tournaments. They’re what I’ve studied the most compared to cash games, and I also find them much more dynamic. Tournaments come in many different structures and formats, while cash games are always the same, which can be positive, but also less exciting for me.

What makes tournaments special is the feeling as you approach the money. You really feel the pressure, both trying to survive and putting pressure on other players. Every decision can feel like your tournament life is on the line. Once you cash, the goal becomes to last as long as possible and push for a deep run, which can take hours or end in minutes. Anything can happen, and if you play well and run well, the rewards can be much bigger than in cash games, even though cash is usually more consistent for strong players.

It really depends how much time I have to spend on that particular session. Obviously, tournaments take much longer to get to the paid places, big tournaments can take days to burst the bubble. Also, of those paid places the top 5-10 players get paid more. Whereas, if you have less time to sped on your poker session, you're better off playing cash games because you can leave whenever you want.

It all depends on the time of day and my mood. If you're up for tournaments, it's ggpoker; they have a huge selection. I like Omaha cash games on the WPT; it's very dynamic with constant action. And if you're just looking for fun, 888 and their freebies are waiting for you.

At first, I was a bit leaning towards real money games, and over time, I realized that both are good, depending on the time, the less time I play cash, the longer I play tournaments.

Cash games are great for pure EV and clean GTO lines, but MTTs feel like a full strategic arc.

You start deep, navigate mid‑stack play, then end up in short‑stack push/fold territory with ICM shaping every decision.

That complexity is what makes them more fun for me.

I prefer tournaments; for me, cash games are more stressful and riskier.

I prefer tournaments, and a structure that doesn't disappoint in terms of long-term prizes.

Hi all,
I enjoy tournaments because every stage of the game feels different and interesting.
Cash games are more stable, but tournaments feel more exciting to me.
Do you prefer tournaments or cash games, and why?

In every type of game, whether a tournament or cash game, there are pros and cons.
Tournaments (MTT, Sit & Go)
Pros:
Large prize pool → the opportunity to win a lot at once
Structure and stages provide strategic depth
A chance to learn to play under pressure (bubble, final table)
Cons:
Long sessions
High variance — you can play for a month without profit
A lot depends on luck
Cash Games (Cash)
Pros:
You can leave whenever you want
Steady income with the right strategy
The best opportunity to practice math skills and hand ranges
Cons:
No big “bubbles”
Requires discipline and bankroll management
Less emotionally intense

it seems like it's one game, but what works in MTT doesn't work in cash. so if you have problems with controlling your emotions then MTT is better

I’ve been thinking a lot about the differences between tournaments and cash games lately. Both formats are interesting, but they require a very different mindset.
In tournaments, patience is extremely important. Sometimes you can go a long time without getting good cards, and you have to survive with your stack while waiting for the right spot. The pressure also increases a lot near the bubble.
Cash games, on the other hand, feel more flexible. You can leave the table anytime, reload if needed, and the blinds stay the same. It feels less stressful but still requires solid decision-making.
Personally, I enjoy tournaments more because of the excitement and the chance to turn a small buy-in into a big win.
What about you?

Tournaments all the way, cash is a good way to win money shortly but huge prizes are in tournaments I think.

Cash games don't appeal to me; I find them boring and lacking intrigue. Tournaments have a certain charm, and I prefer to play them.

I prefer whatever suits me every time or every month or every period in m] life . On the past it was tournaments by far . Later I liked more sats or sngs or zoom cash game. Nowadays less often I play poker , I don't have much free time . I prefer to play a good freeroll with a good prizepool . Play it as mush as my free time allows me to do so . That's a good thing with freerolls .

Both are excellent, the difference is that in cash games, the player can leave at any time, but in tournaments you have to wait, to be able to reach the end.

I think both formats are very interesting, but they definitely require a different mindset and strategy.

Tournaments have a special kind of excitement because the stakes keep increasing as the blinds go up and the field gets smaller. You really need patience and good timing, especially when approaching the bubble or the final table. Stack management and ICM considerations become very important in those moments.

Cash games feel more stable and strategic in a different way. Since the blinds never increase and you can reload, the focus is more on long-term decision making, deep stack play, and exploiting opponents over time. It’s also nice that you can leave the table whenever you want without worrying about losing your tournament life.

Personally, I also lean more toward tournaments. I enjoy the progression of the event and the possibility of turning a small buy-in into a big score. That said, I think playing some cash games can really help improve fundamentals like hand reading and post-flop play.

I definitely prefer tournaments. I enjoy the structure and the excitement of progressing through the levels, watching the blinds increase, and maneuvering my stack strategically. The bubble, final table, and payout jumps add layers of pressure and decision-making that I find really engaging.

Tournaments also give the chance to turn a relatively small buy-in into a big score, which is always thrilling. While cash games are great for steady play and deep-stack strategy, the dynamic nature and excitement of tournaments keep me coming back session after session.
