An article I ran across recently in a respected magazine began with this:
"The object of poker is to win the most money. That's it - that is your goal. That's why you're playing poker."
Now, of course, this sentiment wasn't just discovered by this particular writer.
If you flip through poker books, poker columns, videos, instructional tapes, blogs, you name it, you will see it repeated over and over again.
It has become a mantra, almost like a religious chant, assumed to be true and never challenged.
Well, heretic that I am, I'd like to challenge it here because, frankly, it just isn't true.
The vast majority do not play poker to win the most money. In fact, the vast majority do not play poker to win money at all, let alone "the most."
Oh, don't get me wrong - we all like to win, hope we will win and surely anticipate doing so each time we buy chips.
But you know, I don't really think that winning money is why so many millions play.

I just love the game. I know I'm not good enough to win boatloads of money. But I do enjoy the game and play just about all of them.

My favorites are NLHE, PLO, PLO8 and HORSE.

Trying to improve on my utterly abysmal cash game so I can feed my MTT sickness.

I have one question for all the the dudes and the dudettes out there today. Why do you guys actually play poker:-

A.For fun.

B.To socialize.

C.For the money.

D.I just dont freaking know why.

Please post your answer below.:D

I love to play poker, and I want to become a professional poker player, however, I also want to make enough money to buy an apartment and a new car for me and my girlfriend.

I am retired, so I have a lot of free time. The idea of being in the money is my main motivation to play poker. I like the mental thinking and adjustments it takes to get higher in the field too. Gives me a break from being on Khan Academy.

If video gaming paid, maybe I would have taken up video gaming instead. Video gaming trophies just do not seem as valuable as the bankroll you build playing poker freerolls.

I play because I really love this game. Not for money.
Po k er is not simple game. Playing p0ker, I always learn something new. It helps me to clear the mind. I'm getting stronger while playing p0ker.
For me p0ker - is the way to learn about myself.

A and C. I play the game because I love it and am enthralled by the challenge, the stats, the complexity of the game, etc. Additionally, I just can't imagine a better scenario than making money playing a game as addictive and strategic as this.

Uhh, really?

Seems like about 66% of the folks I play with in a small 1-2/small buy in tournament social club game seem to anticipate being profitable and desire to be so.

This might be a disparity you see between Cash and tournament players.....most cash players (certainly not all) want to be profitable, and even the ones who spew are not honest with themselves often that they are fish.

Just keeping it real...
