If you never want to deposit again, you need to figure out how to protect your BR.

Depending on what games you choose to play, I would suggest only using 1%-3% of your BR while it is very small.

So...if you play MTTs, start by playing $1 games with some "shots" at $2 and $3 games. 🙂

Good luck!

Everybody has their own different ways of managing their bankroll. If you have $100 I would play a little bit of 5-10 dollars of play. If you're gonna play bigger I would play $25 but only fire one bullet buy-in. You don't want to go extra $25 cause it will eat up that $100 easily if you're not being discipline with your BRM.

It all depends on what you play, tournaments or cash games, and your style of play. I think that the optimal allowable risk is 3-5% of the bankroll per day.

I think this question is individual for each player, but in general you are right. I also stick to such a system. I have a limit for the day which usually does not exceed 2-3%.

When building a bankroll, it is important to take into account the playable limit multiplied by 100 buy-ins minimum. That is, having a bankroll of $ 100, you really need to use 1% of the deposited amount.

Hello guys! How much money do i need to win playing freerolls to start micro limits?
I think you can win 1 cent to play micro limits but usually with Bankrollmanagement you must at least win one freeroll tournament to start with anything

The general rule of thumb for bankroll management is no more than 10% of your bankroll.

If you have a bankroll of $100, than you should buy-in no more than $10.

That's a bit high, for me, and I would suggest that you might want to start tournaments in the range of $1-$3. That will give you many more opportunities, and help either help, or destroy your poker confidence level. I would also suggest that you try freerolls. They are a great way to practice, and you might even get a few extra dollars to help fund yourself.

Be aware, though, that freeroll players play totally different than buy-in players, but at a $1-$2 level, they are much the same. At the $10+ level, you'll find that the quality of player goes up drastically, and as a result doing better at that level is much tougher.

Some easy to remember numbers, that will work reasonably well, are 100 BIs for tournaments and 30 BIs for cash games. So with 100$ you should play no higher than 1$ tournaments or 2NL cash games. Of course its fine to play higher, if you are ok depositing again, when or if the first 100$ is gone. But then the 100$ is not really a bankroll, its just a budget.

Ooof well there is a lot of opinions out here and a lot of scary ones.

So let me straighten up a few things first:

If you don't want to loose your bankroll then NEVER and i mean NEVER play tournaments that buy-in is equal to 25% or 10% of your bankroll that-s just suicide!

Normal guides give the advice to keep 100-300 buyins in mind for your bankroll.
And here is the catch: The more players take part in the tournament the bigger your bankroll has to be. If you play tournaments with only maximum of 300 players i would have no issues playing 100 and sometimes even just only 70 buyins for that tournament. But as soon as the average number of players go up you need a bigger bankroll.
Therefore i would recommend to start with playing Sit n gos. Play 1$ sit'n'gos with maximum of 45-180 players. So you get the feeling for an MTT - build your bankroll to 200$ bankroll - see that you are profitabel and then try playing some 1$ MTT with 3-6k players and you'll see that variance can be very cruel (or nice) to you.

Also it depends on what kind of tournaments you play. If you play Hyper-turbo blind levels you will need more buyins as well in contrast to when you are playing 10-15mins marathon blind levels.

Here is a short version:

  • 1. At least have 100 buy-ins in your bankroll
  • 2. If the tournament has a huge field - have more then 100 buy-ins
  • 3. If the tournament blind levels are fast (<5minutes) - have more then 100 buy-ins!
If you have any more questions maybe with examples feel free to ask.

Really depends on what site you are playing.
Take a look at the sit'n'go tables. Find the cheapest buy-in.
E.g. on european Pokerstars client 0.25$ 18-45 players sit'n'go's.
If you have won in multiple occasions in freerolls and know that you can rebuild the bankroll you can play a more agressive bankroll-management for the start (but only to an amount where you are comfortable that you can grind it back up with freerolls)
So in my opinion i would start playing these sit n goes with a bankroll of 12.25$ so only 50x Buyins. As soon as i would dip below the 12.25$ i would stop playing them grinding only freerolls again. Well i would never stop playing freerolls in that stage in the first place to be honest.
But and here's the big catch. You have to grind up to 50$ so you can get up to the next stage. Meaning you start with 50xBuyins BRM and then work your way to 100x BRM.
This will also help to boost your confidence levels.
If you managed to get your bankroll from 0-12,25$ you know that you can do it anytime again. If you've beaten the 0,25$ sit'n'go you know that you can go back any time and regrind if you start having losses at 0,50$ buyin. So stick to a fixed plan and remind yourself - if it goes wrong i will have no issues getting back to where i allready was.

There is no point in taking about bankroll management, when you start with zero, because you can never be worse off than having to go back to freerolls. If you win 5$ in a freeroll, you can play 5 1$ MTT, and if you fail to cash in any of those, then you just continue playing freerolls.

Lots of solid advice here. I especially agree, that with a small bankroll than 100$, we should typically be looking at the SnG lobby (or cash games) rather than the tournament lobby. Which games to mainly play will then depend on the site.

* On PokerStars international site I would mainly be playing the 1$ 18-45 man "on demand" and then drop down to the 50c 18-45 man "on demand", if I went below 50$.

* On ACR I would mainly be playing the 1,5$ (plus rake) SnGs, both the "on demand" type and regular 6-9 mans, and then again move down to 50c games, if I dropped below 50$.

* On 888 Poker I would start with at least 150-200$ and then play the 3$ 6-9 man SnGs. The 1$ SnGs on 888 Poker has to much rake, and there are not enough MTTs for 1$ or less to give reasonable volume.

Good choise of tournaments above there :deal:!
Since you pointed out the rake on 888 Poker i'd like to share my opinion on the rake on Pokerstars for SnG!
There are plenty of options on what Tourney to choose so i'll give you a list including the rake and tell you why to play or why not to in my opinion!
Since Pokerstars removed the low buy-in sit n go for 2 cents and 10 cents there are plenty of sit n go and tournament that got way softer due to the pool having to move up.

1$ 9-p Knockout Sit'n'go - 15% Rake - NEVER and i mean NEVER play it - 10 minutes blindstructure in a PKO can be very bad for newer players that overestimate the value of a bounty in comparison to the stack - and you will be deepstacked for longer - also the rake is just a no go!

1$ 9-p Turbo Knockout Sit'n'go 12% Rake - This tournament will be handy for later explorations in the MTT side. Since pokerstars has hourly running 1,10$ and 3,30$ BountyBuilder Turbo on demand it can help you to get a feel for that field and those 2 tournaments have a very soft pool and can result in great ROI% - unfortunatly the 1,10 runs at the main hours around 1.300 runners - so very heavy on variance. Try the 1$ 9-P TUrbo knockout when you are thinking about moving up stakes and get a feel if you maybe want to focus on PKO MTT's.

1$ 18-45p Sit'n'go 9% Rake - Start here 9% rake is the lowest you'll find and these tournaments will most likely get full to 45p players so you get a feel for MTT's whilst having low rake. With 7 places paid you will also learn how to play in ICM situation since the payjumps will be important to keep track of!

Very much agree with this. I actually did this back in the day, when I first got into tournaments after trying out cash games. Back then there was 1$ 45-man and 180-man with regular speed and a 1,5$ 90-man KO, all of which I grinded quite a bit. Today unfortunately there is only the 1$ 18-45 man "on demand" left, and the next step up is the 2$ 18-45 and 18-180 mans, which are turbos.

The turbos are harder to beat, and they center much more around preflop push-fold play. So if you dont want that, or its not going well, then the next step today should probably be the 3,5$ 9-man with regular speed. This has 11% rake, which is high but still beatable in my experience.
