If you start playing poker for the sole reason of making money, it will be very hard to ever make money. It takes a long time, and a lot of effort to start winning small stake tourney. Even longer to be competitive in the larger stake games. If you play for fun, you will get way more out of poker.

1. patience
one good advice i received from professionals is you cannot win a mtt tournament in the first hour.
2. perseverance
you are going to lose at times awful losses but you just got to get back on that horse and ride em again
3. adaptability
the ability to change styles of play based on what you are facing at that time

a sidenote there is till youve played a certain amount of hands and basically seen every hand imaginable you still are an infant in this game imho
after play 10,000s of thousands of hands you probably have learned a few nice things and should have a pretty full toolbox and as/when needed you can pull it out to pull off wins over bubbling etc..

4. studying
you have to be open to continually learning (no one is a master at poker) otherwise they would win everygame everytime somehow no matter what are dealt how bad variance is etc. there is always more you can learn

5. Notes
identifying your opponnents deciphering how you can use their tendencies in order to add chips and beat them.

Last thing can not only live on poker alone one good advice from the pokerkid was simply have a full good life outside of poker. Meaning family friends doing things and not being so driven that poker is only thing that you live in this bubble.

All true except for #4! There are many masters at poker... but the thing with poker is 'anyone can win in the short term' (or Lose!).... "that's poker"

You will be more successful if have a full good life cause then you can play for fun. If is no pressure you play for love of it and are not driven by the money when you get a shot at the money you should have a good shot of TID

Thank you for the advice. Good luck;)

In order for you to become profitable in poker, you must follow some rules.

-stay focused
-manage very well your bankroll
-study a lot
-practice a lot.
-dedicate yourself

this is the receipt for success.

Good luck and have fun!

There is no way that poker will be profitable for you if you expect its going to be easy money in short term and you need these rules of course :D

For me it is more of a hobby because I find it fun and I know thatI have a greater chance losing than winning, lol (probably because of the way I play). If I dedicated fully towards it, the fun factor would be gone. I guess it depends what you make out of it. No one ever said you can't win big.

Definitely profitable in the long term if you're somewhat better than the average of your opponents.
If you're unprofitable for a long time, you are being outplayed.

It's important to say that games are supposed to be fun. If you are not profitable but you enjoy playing even losing some money (without hurting your finances) that's totally fine. We all pay for our fun hobbies, after all.

I mean Fedor holz would argue that you can make poker money in 2016
If you look at the top of the food chain; you will find people with good IQs plus they have studied the game.

They probably could succeed in other fields quite easily.

I usually make money live at cash and especially tournaments. But because of distance to the clubs I don't get to play very often. In online poker, I've never made a dime that I got to keep. No idea why, just seems to be so many more bad beats, and perhaps I play too loose after so many hours of uneventful play.

Make some money with online poker is not that hard for those who play seriously. But being a professional and make a living on it is for very few people.

Poker can be profitable but it needs a lot of work to bedone .
You need to study the game, how toplay best position aggressively ,your hands that you have played and learn from your mistakes , discuss in forums like this to learn from others new tricks or things you didn't know .
Also , having a good HUD and learning by the time how to use it the best way possible , taking notes on others , ,improving your focus and mentalstate on the game are important to succeed .
Take little steps each time ,when you beat one go to the next , when you master one level go to another, have bankroll management , be patient ,be aggressive , bet correctly .
I think when sb masters all this he can have steady income from poker .

I have always made money by poker mostly via freerolls. Few days back I made $75 just from $1. Though the dark side to my game is I lost everything in roulette. I have great lust for casino which I need to conquer. But poker has never disappointed me. There has been losses but the net result is towards positive side. Now I am just refraining myself from Casino. I have never accepted poker as a mean of livelihood. It is just the hobby for me.
The answer to your question is yes you can make good money from poker. You need to be disciplined. You need to learn from your mistakes and most important you must respect every hand you have whether it is 2 7 or A K . Remember every dog has its day.
Best of luck.

Then why not just play the poker?

You are losing because your not good enough to play the level you are playing.

That is the simple, brutal, truth.

You can't just buy into a big tournament and "hope" for a good cash. A good part of these fields are very good players with years of experience.

Start playing .50-1.00 tournaments, when you can be successful in these, move up to the 3.00-5.00 range and so on.

"Crawl, walk, run...."
