Tilt is something that every single poker player has dealt with at one time or another. If you meet someone who says they haven't, they are probably lying or perhaps they are a robot. Tilt in poker can have an extremely negative impact on your game, and at its worst can destroy bankrolls.

It is important to know exactly what Tilt is, be able to recognize what your triggers are and when it is happening to you. But even more important is learning to combat and deal with it by learning from it and stopping or diminishng its affect on your game.

We've covered everything you need to know about tilt and then some:

The Anatomy of Online Poker Tilt

Read the article, and comment here to let us know what you learned, and what other tips you may have on dealing with tilt. Feel free to share your tilt stories and how you have been successful in turning it around. After all, none of us want to be this guy, right?

Excellent article and in my mine opinion is the main trouble poker players has to face. Now i'm gonna try to keep track on my signs of tilts and try to stabilize before i collapse. Tilt already destroyed my entire bankroll, and i always get knocked out of tourneys when i know i made the right play but some idiot called and get lucky on the turn. So check the signs, and the art of gambling is recognizing when to quit so good luck to all, the mental game is vital!

excellent article, sometimes when you play tournaments and you are in top positions you play tilt, but sometimes it becomes your enemy and you lose pots that you could have won, I have seen professional players in final Calls whith A8 A9 and wins, they come out of the safe area and risk

I personally agree with the "Check your baggage at the gate" section. I play only sng and tournaments and the problem is you can't just quit in the middle of the tournament when you're on tilt mode. Which is why you need to make sure that you're in a good state when you start playing.

I personally realize that am in the best state of mind if I play a game of poker just after I wake up from a nap.

I really enjoyed that article, and I learned a few things. What I will take away from it the most is, it's ok to take a little break and miss a few hands, to clear my head.

Great article guys. I love hearing tilt stories because people suffering tilt at the poker tables will be doing the same thing in life....and screwing their life up at the same time while blaming everyone else! Recognise them?

So. I love the heading, CHECK YOUR BAGGAGE AT THE GATE.

This is so the best advice before you start playing. I know so many people (including times I have too) that have gone on a gambling spree when in a bad mood or bad frame of mind. You really need to have that little control button that says NOOOOOOOOOOOOO when you are feeling moody!

SO, having approached the game in a good state of mind, I find the one thing that helps me control potential tilt is to understand the rules of poker.

Poker is not based on the best two starting cards! SO many people think it is.

Most tilt probably comes at showdown. Poker is about the best five cards at the end of play... SO remember this one nugget......... Poker is about probability. Just because you think you have the best hand, doesn't always mean you have! The other guy could have a better one! (Unless of course you have a royal flush!) As you don't get to see what they are holding till showdown, its based on skill and guess work to some different extents.

If your gamble (yes, remember, poker is about gambling and not certainty!) doesn't pay off, you need to be mature enough to accept that you got it wrong. As long as your play was correct that's fine. If your play was incorrect, then sort it out. Blame yourself, not the clever guy who beat you!

The bottom line is, (as in life) start taking responsibility for your own actions and not blame others! (You dont tilt so much then!) Remember its a game of cards about numbers and probability. Not certainty! Its a gamble, which you may not win.....and accepting that from the start should make you more accepting of the loss you suffer as you chose to accept the loss before you started!

Anyway....tilt isn't always bad. I recall getting tilted by the outcome of a hand once (silly me) and then next hand just shoved my remaining stack on 82o. I decided that playing well and being beaten wasn't working so I may as well play as badly as my opponent who seemed to still be winning. My tilt soon disappeared when I flopped 882. Big smiles on my face as the opponent turned over AA.

It's not what you got at the start, it's what you got at the end.

And isn't that the way it should be!!

Good luck!

Good insightful article. Prone to it myself at times. You even know at times when you are on a tilt if you don't up and leave you are gonna dust off your stack.
Also that picture in the 1st reply to this thead is very apt. We have all had the computer like that in full blown tilt mode LOL

The mental game can be more important in poker than in any other form of competition. It is one of the only games in the world where you can play perfectly and lose repeatedly.

The way is to avoid very strong emotions, to take a deep breath and relax to try to create some distance between you and the imminent crisis.

"There are many concepts to master to become a successful poker player, but one holds the key to your ultimate success and it has nothing to do with cards. The ability to keep your emotions in check – to avoid tilt – will go a long way towards determining how successful you will be."
"Tilt is like temptation. The best way for some to resist temptation is to avoid it altogether, and the same applies to tilt. If you can learn to recognize what causes you to tilt, devise a strategy to keep tilt at bay and then – perhaps most importantly – execute that strategy as soon as you sense tilt happening, you will greatly increase your chance to have a successful poker session."

Above are the first and last paragraphs of the article. I could not agree with them more. I felt the need to repost it as members may have just browsed it and do understand the importance of these two statements. They are vital to success in Poker. There are many like me who did not have this advice and had to learn the hard way by loosing their bankroll multiple times.

The best way to counter tilt is to stop playing for a while. There is always tomorrow. We can be our own worst enemy sometimes. On Pokerstars they have features that can help to save you from yourself. Features like restricting deposit amounts, restricting cash games, mtt and sng buyin levels and taking a complete break from games called self exclusion. I do like self exclusion and use it often I can restrict myself from being able to play games for a minimum of 12 hours. Helps so that I do not try and chase losses when I have a bad session. Check tools--> Responsible Gaming you will see them and what each does. Other sites has similar features just got research them or ask support.

For mtt players stop playing maybe impossible to do sometimes as we are still in the middle of tourney. I suggest going for a walk, washing your face, listening to some music, siting out for short period, tightening up range, playing premiums, reducing the number of decision you have per hand by playing push or fold preflop.

When I enter tilt. I disconnect for a few minutes. Remove from the head all the negative that has accumulated. with a clear head you need to continue to play. The strategies for calming I really liked especially with the music.

I liked this article, everything is written on the case !The best way to counter tilt is to stop the game for a while.I play MTT and sometimes it's impossible to stop playing, and the best quick method I use is to drench my head with cold tap water, it's refreshing !

I agree with everything and i just want to add this:"Only time when tilt is justified is when you are tired (and playing tired is also your fault),every other time time when you are tilting and you are not tired then is just your own poker lack of knowledge."

Well, quite extensive and detailed article. Interesting, instructive. Some concepts will try to experience the exact walk and preparation for the game. The main thing in my opinion to be able to stop, the inability to do it killed a decent amount of my bankrolls. In such situations, I remember one saying my Father would beat not for the fact that played, and for that revenge!

An excellent theme is raised, Tilt's condition is a very popular discussion in the poker world. I believe that it is necessary to fight with tilt, as it kills our game and our money. I personally stop the game during tilt and it doesn’t matter whether I play in a tournament or not, and I go to push-ups 20 times, then squat and breathe very often, it helps me to feel good. I know very new players who do not know how to deal with tilt, I advise you to read this article to them.
Good luck to everyone at the poker tables, I hope you will not fall into the tilt rod.:shakehand:top:

When i first started poker, tilt was a detriment to my overall game,so i decided along the way that i would eliminate it from my game and make it work FOR me,,,not against,,,,meaning i would play better after i felt tilt. 😉 It's possible,,,,,i'm in control of Me,,,,nothing else matters.😀

Awesome advice !
I love the "mantras" that you can chant to yourself .... to calm yourself and talk yourself into better luck.
The Food Break is one that I have used many times , maybe to many - poker can be fattening !
That break at a casino is not my thing , 1 I don't go to casinos , 2 I don't have a cell phone to play fav music.

My best thing to do I have found is "Attitude " , sometimes it is best just to keep saying , it's a Game !!! Once I have been knocked out , there is a "next time" .

I have learned , that every hand is a lottery so we all need LUCK to go with the knowledge of the game . A win every other hand or so also helps to keep you focused ! 🙂

Excellent article for those who have this problem.
The tilt can affect you in other tables you are playing, I already happened to me, when I lose, for example AA vs A2O, I get angry and lose control, and this affects other games.
I think the best advice I read, is taking a break, recognize that this is not 100% mentally to play, and I go up for air, or drink, and return to the computer when you're calmer.

gI 🙂

TYTY, great article
I think that 1 of the most importaint parts of decent player (I guess in any game) is how they treat bad situations. "When your emotions rise too high the brain is designed to shut off higher level thinking" , yeah, can agree with that LUL
being pumped up after coolering some1 and being down after loosing few overpars into overpars si something that will... well you know.
to add I think that alot of the time it comes down to practice. How od ten do you find some1 "luling, donkeying, wowing" at poker table in situations that are qure common awre Ax are beat by some flush dro and the "unexperienced" player act like 35/65 is 10000% win

Sometimes we bring an emotional baggage to poker. Talk with woman, problems at work. When this happens, positive results will not come. It's better not to play. Others, unfortunately, happen in the middle of a session. These are worse because you can not avoid it. They just happen. When you build a considerable stack and lose everything against a call of a donk for example. These are the ones I have to learn to live with. Congratulations on the article. It was essential to me.

In the beginning everyone delt with tilt issues.

Anyone who claims the opposite isn't true. But after years of grinding and playing poker, I just don't care at all about bad beats, coolers and similar shit.

Now, sometimes it can make you feel disappointed or a bit angry, it's absolutely normal, but I don't spend much energy on overthinking about unlucky stuff that happens to me anymore.

Tilt is my biggest problem. All the setbacks I take are very painful.
I read a lot about tilta, I know a few techniques how to try to fight it, but at the moment of tilting nothing helps me.I do not like to lose, and I find it hard to get used to losing

“Tilt” means that someone plays very differently and is much worse than usual. However, as I have noticed, most people use this term to describe players who play too many hands in a very aggressive manner. This is not true. If someone constantly plays in a superagressive style, this does not mean that he is in tilting. He just plays in the usual style of a maniac.
Being a good player means knowing how to manage your poker mind and minimize tilt as much as possible.

I don't agree that if someone says they haven't, they are probably lying or perhaps they are a robot. I played on Pokerstars when it had 80% of bad beats. One day you are used to it and think it's normal. And start surprising if you haven't been beaten by the player with 3 (or less) outs. The more you play the less you are prone to tilt. I saw the same with tennis players. When they start playing they broke their rockets after every mistake. But then after many and many tourneys they are calm whatever happened. But yeah if you didn't have bad beats for some time and then it happens you start having that feeling again.
