Playing one and the same tournament I`ve noticed that it`s easier for me to play at the middle of the game and on the final table. More, I know 30% of the players and their way of betting. It`s obvious - I`ve studied a lot of the game practically and theoretically and need only luck.

In my opinion, the simple answer is no, you can't become a consistently good poker player without doing some stuying. Strategies that were successful a year ago may no longer be as effective because poker is always changing. Regardless of how proficient you are, remaining at the top necessitates ongoing education, such as evaluating hands, examining trends and adjusting to new strategies that your opponents may be using.You could eventually get to the point where you are an extremely skilled player, but if you dont keep up with the advancements in the game, you will ultimately start to fall behind.

The greatest players in the world are constantly improving their game, learning new theories or even receiving instruction from special coaches to improve their abilities. Not only is poker about reading people and understanding the mathematics, but its also about adjusting to your competition.However, I believe that if you completely cease your studies, you will begin to reach a point where you may even begin to go backwards in some areas. Therefore, although you may be able to ride for a time, the long term profitability would likely decline. As in any other competitive field, maintaining a sharp mind is essential.

Hello folks,

this is a difficult question i think because it depends what is a "good poker player"!?
In my opinion most of us want to have fun and a good time @poker table, so if you additional reach good results and you bankroll is getting bigger over months, i would say for a hobby player it can be enough.
I would never say that you stop with studying the game because a few things you may forget from time to time, so it is always usefull to refresh also basics and analysing your own game.
If somebody wants to reach higher levels and making big money @poker tables you must spend hours per week to improve your game, it´s not enough to play more.

Well I think sure you can still be profitable without reading new books or watching tutorials. But I also think it's important to do hand reviews to Identify possible leaks cause we all have them.

I do think that there are poker players who have won huge amounts without studying the game or engaging with it regularly. That's the beauty of poker: anyone, whether a beginner, advanced player, casual player, or professional, can beat anyone else or even win a tournament during a streak of luck, even with bad cards.In the long run, of course, it is advantageous to know a lot about the game, with strategies and mathematical knowledge, in order to be successful in this game on a lasting basis, and not just temporarily.

I think the game changes all the time, the strategy improves and if you stop studying and evolving with the game you lose your edge. What is GTO today was not considered GTO 10 years ago. All that to say, since everybody has access to the same information, your edge becomes smaller and smaller until you have none.

Short answer: Yes, against less expierenced players, in softer fields, for a while.
Long answer: Not consistently, not long-term, and not at any significant stake. Because poker isn’t just about playing cards—it’s about staying ahead. And without study, you fall behind.

Now here's the good news. Studying doesn't mean only learning GTO for hours each day.

It can look like:
-Watching breakdowns of high-stakes hands on YouTube.
-Reviewing your own sessions and noting your leaks.
-Discussing hands with better players.
-Reading one solid poker book and actually applying it.

You could be able to continue playing a good game but not a game where you would have the edge over the top players. So, my opinion is that you should never stop studying if you want to prevail and be profitable.

Without studying, you'll only be able to win at low stakes due to poor privacy, but once you get higher, without knowledge you'll have nothing to withstand stronger players.

I don’t think you ever reach a point where you can stop studying. The game changes too much...player pools adjust, strategies evolve and new tools appear all the time. Even if you’re already winning, regular study keeps you ahead instead of just keeping up. For me, it’s less about fixing mistakes now and more about staying sharp and adaptable.

Absolutely you can be a good poker player without studying. MTT specialists may need a little more studying with ICM, structures, increasing blinds, and learning different strategies for different stages. Many of the things people study are simply intuitive things for some people. There has been many times when a I see a poker lesson that is something I already intrinsically understood without putting it into poker terminology. All this said, there's always things to learn and study and this is true in every aspect of life.

It depends, what you mean by being "a good player". If you want to be among the very best, then of course you need to constantly study, because this is, what your competition do. But if you just want to be good enough to beat soft games like online microstakes games or live 1/2 or 1/3 games, then the answer is actually no. Once you have a solid ABC game hammered down, you dont need to study any more to continue beating such games.

The reason, you dont need to study any more, is because your opponents will either stop playing or move up. And then you play against some new opponents, who are also beginners and make the same fundamental mistakes as the previous ones. So the games dont really evolve much, but instead the player pool renew. However if you want to not just win but have the highest possible winrate and/or eventually move up, then you do need to continue to study.

I say it's almost impossible for that to happen.
I myself stopped studying some time ago because of my work, and I couldn't keep the same average! I just really made it worse!
