Who do you think is the best athlete in history?

As others have mentioned, this is an impossible task to name just one. For me personally, I would discount team sports.

I noticed not many have mentioned a female, Serena Williams should definitely be on anyone's list, as well as Simone Biles.
 
When you talk about an athlete, do you mean athletics as a sport or in general?
Best athlete: Carl Lewis
Best sportsman .... hard to say! It should include sports performance with social life! A sportsman are public images, examples to follow in everything they do in life, every day! Or so it should be!
 
I think, this will not quite honestly and fairly call only one person: man or woman... For the all time Human history was, have now,
and will yet the many Great Athletes...
 
For me its Wayne Gretzky bécasse im envers hockey fan but hé hasard lot of big athlète in each sports
 
Jack Johnson turn of the century boxer or Jim Thorpe Leaning towards Thorpe. Dang almost forgot Jesse Owens. Quitting before I get confused.
 
I didn't catch Pele or Maradona, I caught very little of our novel Gica Hagi, but what Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi did didn't do much. Many goals trophies golden boots. On the athletics side, Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin are my favorites.
 
Larry Bird, no whining, no diving, no bad excuses, just a true warrior who beat everyone of the great ones in basket during his career. When he retired the game became a bit easier for the upcoming stars. Go Larry!

I'm not a fan of swimming sports, but this is something sky-high

I like Zlatan Ibragimovic for his style and humor.
But in my opinion athlete need to be global social hero for young bloods.
Not just be great at sport but to give motivation and support kids.

Gordie Howe, he played 5 decades of professional hockey, i dont think there is anyone else out there that has played at a high level for so long!

For me and probably most Surinamese the best athlete of all time for us is definitely Anthony Nesty.
Anthony who.....you might be asking?

This is such a loaded question, because it is hard to judge overall talent based on a single sport. You could say Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Sydney Crosby, Mike Tyson, etc. But if I had to pick the one person who had the most attributes at the highest level I would go with Muhammed Ali - Fast, accurate, great stamina, very intelligent, and extremely charismatic. Also, has done so much in his life, and with his life, that he is an icon to many.

He is also one Athlete, that no matter where in the world you are from, if you say his name 99% of people know exactly who you are talking about.

Jesse Owens, won the Olympic Gold Medal in Nazi Germany, in front of the Racist Adolph Hitler and show him, there is No Superior Race as he wrongly proclamed!
