After some discussion ITT i've finally decided how to play AK against a fairly competent player.

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (5 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

UTG ($23.30)
MP ($18.71)
Button ($25.40)
Hero (SB) ($20.44)
BB ($13.96)

Preflop: Hero is SB with A

, K
spade.gif

1 fold, MP bets $0.38, 1 fold, Hero raises to $1.20, 1 fold, MP raises to $3, Hero raises to $20.42 (All-In), 1 fold

Total pot: $6.20 | Rake: $0

Results:
Hero didn't show A

, K

(nothing).
Outcome: Hero won $6.20

Lucky, there is a massive difrence as to what the best way to play AK is with 100BB stacks and 180BB stacks imo.
100BB stacks i get it in prf alot but with 180BB unless villain maniac and is likly to stack of with AQ/AJ/KQ i think where just value cutting our selfs alot in that spot.
Where just folding out his small pairs and weaker aces and geting called by AA/KK.

You say he is fairly competent, what u think a fairly competent villain is calling a prf overshove with 180BB stacks with? It isnt AJ and 88 thats for sure...

hes only got like 75bb effective stack against this villian so really its irrelevant how to play a 180bb stack in this situation

It's 10nl so 180bb is correct.

Speaking of swings I spent all day recovering from suckouts, runner runners, and being dominated by AA vs. KK 6 times.

Well I haven't played on FT in a long time. I e-mailed them to block my account about a year ago. (When I was playing like an idiot and lost a lot of money) So finally was able to get it reactivated with a max deposit limit of $50 :) So been playing $5NL... UNTIL!!! I found a player I used to take all kinds of money from, he was playing $25NL VP87/PFR80/AgF82 so of COURSE I had to sit to the left of him!!! I was nickle and diming him until I ended up with KK and flopped top set 8KQ, I checked he bet I flat called Q on the turn and I check he shoves, it was perfect! He alone towards the end of my downswing was the one that brought me back positive again :)

At 6-max what are your thoughts on A9/A10. It's standard to play them on the button right? Where else?

A9/A10 are strong enough that you should be raising them even utg in a 6 max game.

UTG? I am a huge nit I admit, but that sounds a bit loose lol. MP maybe but I hate getting dominated lol. I'll try and open up though as my stats are super nitty and I need to bump them.

I've been playing tighter than any of these recommendations lol.

Fox's Chart -
UTG : 22+, ATs+, AJo
UTG+1 : A9s, ATo
CO : A7s, any two broadway suited, 98s+, A9o, KQo
Button : Axo, any two broadway, K9s+, 87s+, 97s+

Ryan Fees recommendations –

UTG : 22+, ATs+, AJo+, 98s+, KQo, KJs+
MP : A9s+, AT, KTs+ KJo
CO : A5s+, A9o+, 65s+, JTo+, QTo+, KTo, K9s, T8s+, Q9s+
Button : A8o, K9o, Q9o, J9o, 98o+, 54s+, 64s+, 96s+, T6s+, K8s+, A2s+

I also found two posts on twoplustwo (I think that's where I found it) who gave their starting hand values that I found interesting. Many people thnk 22/16 is the correct way to play preflop, and it's certain that it's somewhere near that range.

If you want to be 16/12

UTG : 88+, AK/AQ, ATs+, KJs+ ,QJs
MP : 66+, AJ+, A9s+, K10s+, Q10s+, J10s, KQo
CO : 22+, A9o+, Axs, K6s+, Q9s+, J9s+, 108s+, 98s, K10o+, QJo
Btn : 22+, Ax, K8o+, any two 9 or higher, any two 7 or higher suited, small suited connectors and one gapers

If you want to be 22/16

Standard Opening Ranges for me at a completely unknown table:
UTG/UTG+1: A7s+ AJo+ KTs+ KQo 9Ts+ 22+
MP: Same as above + Axs QTs+ and start adding more SCs / one gappers
CO/BN: Same as above + Kxs Q8s+ J8s+ all SCs suited one gappers, A7o+ Any two broadway, and a bunch of off suit connected junk.
SB: About the same as MP, but a bit looser..

Oh. My. God.

P O S I T I O N P O S I T I O N P O S I T I O N

Those are not good. The way to get to 22/16 (if that for some reason is something you strive for) most certainly does NOT mean opening 22 UTG and treating CO and BTN as the same position. Open 70% on the button - that's how you get your VPIP up.

"Any suited and then some" is what I open on the button. And I don't play 22-66 UTG.

I know, I play 77+ UTG I thought that bit was wierd. This isn't what i'm aiming for, I just searched for pre-flop opening ranges and found this.

On a side note, i'm moving down, i'm admiting that I don't think i'm on a dwonswing and i'm just getting killed and spewing everywhere. I still have a bankroll of $175 but the way i'm running/playing it won't last very long (I moved up to 10NL with $325).

It sucks and I feel like shit but I still wanna be able to play without having to re-deposit. AAARRRRGGGHHHH! That's better.

Surprising to see Fees suggest such a retarded opening range.

+1 to what Fredrik said - nearly any two on the button (or cut back to all pairs, all suited hands, all offsuit aces, most kings, most queens, lots of jacks, the bigger tens, etc). That's the main difference between a solid 'nit' slash tight tag and a lag/tag.

But also +1 to the other thing Fredrik said: you shouldn't aim for exact stats. Being laggier on the button will show you a (HUUUUGE) profit, but don't worry about playing a specific style.

Oh. My. CIRCLE.

FYP!

But seriously, there is no way I would raise with A9 or usually AT UTG and I am loose unto idiotic.

The main reason (to reiterate) is these sort of hands are hard to play out of position. If I hit a flop I stand a good chance of either bet/calling or check/calling a good portion of my chips away. Actually most any hand is harder to play UTG.

Opening A9 with a nice raise UTG might be ok in a tight game when you have a tight image (which you are not gonna have if you open A9+ usually) to get some blinds.

I tried to edit my post to avoid confusion but I can't now lol. Yeah, pretty much all that post apart from the top comment was copied, i'm trying for a specific range or anything and I know you should be opening very wide on the button.
I was also making the point that A9/A10 sucks, except from the button/CO, and when the button plays the CO sucks again. They get me into so many problems. I do need to loosen up though if I want to play 6-max i'm running at 14/13 ish.
