Do you believe in continuous good luck or bad luck runs in poker?

I believe in hot and cold runs, but I don’t think luck stays permanently on one side. 😅
Over a large sample, variance tends to balance out, so I try not to chase a “lucky streak.”

I do think you can go through some crazy hot or cold runs in poker, but I don't think luck actually has a memory. You can win several sessions in a row and then suddenly lose a few, even if you're playing the same way. For me, the important thing is not letting a winning streak make me overconfident or a losing streak make me chase losses. Variance can be brutal in the short term but poker is mathematics so in longer run luck doesnt exist because real world value has to converge with expected value

Cool. That's a great question!! Yes, like some others, I also believe in hot or cold streaks, but I try to remember the good moments and accept the failures because in poker, you can make mathematically correct decisions and still lose. There are just days when I sit down to play not in my best form, but I have to play, and my game is far from A-game, and that's what affects my decisions. In summary, in my opinion, there isn't much difference: whether you make decisions based on mathematics or intuitively - you love this game and continue to play, even despite cold streaks.

Oh yeah, I think it's not just perception, but that actually different games are being played by someone. What else is going on in your head? Do you have personal or financial problems? In my opinion, things like that can definitely influence your poker game, consciously or unconsciously.

Negative and positive streaks are part of the game, it is normal to feel that we are great players when we have a positive streak, and that we are bad players when we have a bad streak, the best thing is to study and study our game, to see the mistakes we are making, studying and adding volume to the tournaments, the results will be seen. 😎🤑

Of course—there are good streaks in poker where you can win a lot of money, far more than usual; but there are also bad streaks where, no matter how well you play your hand or your tournament, you walk away with nothing. That is why we need to be mentally prepared for these kinds of situations.

Yeah, I think poker can definitely feel like you’re on a long good or bad luck run, but it’s mostly variance. Over a big sample, things usually even out, so I try not to let a short run change how I play.

i absolutely believe the poker gods are against me ! it's been 10 years of bad luck , ever since i mucked a winner in a big cash game pot after calling a river wager in a no limit holdem game at oceans 11 casino in california .

I believe in continuous good luck… right up until the poker gods remember I exist 😂. A few good sessions in a row and suddenly I’m feeling unstoppable, then boom, AA gets cracked and I’m humbled real quick. Enjoy the heater while it lasts, because poker always has a way of collecting its rent.

Do you believe in hot streaks/cold streaks in your poker game? Or is it just another example of how flawed our human perception is? I definitely feel that I have periods when I'm playing better or playing worse, but I think that is a "me" thing, and not some blessing/curse of a hot/cold deck that is outside of my own control. What do you think?

Maybe in a short term, or in a single session.
But I usually don't have the "it depends on me" feeling neither.

In periods of bad luck I think poker software "don't like me". In unlucky periods in my mind is forming opinion that I`m on a bad wave and have to use my seconds to escape. Something mystical. I always stop my seconds on 7: 57, 47, 37, 27... I believe I`ll survive using my time. Sometimes.

Well there are going to be down swings and upswings. Even your AA only have 82% preflop odds. So that other 18% you could still lose and sometimes your 18% just takes over. Another example is you can just flip a coin, even though its 50% chance of heads occurring, you could still get tails 7 times in a row. That is just variance. So no it doesn't only depend on how you play but also on how the deck plays.

I definitely think luck has something to do with poker - but so has variance and so has skill... - At the end of the day, it all comes down to making right decisions.. You can't control luck or variance but if you keep making the right choices - the skill part will show up in the long run...

I can't believe it, I think dedication and study bring good results but this weekend I lost 3 allins of AA vs. AQ villão, all of whom beat two ladies on the flop, impressive! Now I'm believing in a tide of bad luck because there's no logic kkkk

Well I think hot/cold streaks are variance. Having played millions of hands of poker it is clear to me that hot and cold streaks are absolutely real in poker. I've experienced both myself many times.

Yes I belive there are good and bad runs of luck in poker.

Its basically another name for variance.

poker is also about luck of the cards, so yes you could have a run of hot and cold. Just weather the storm and you should do just fine.

I do believe. Sometimes when i run bad its bad daily and when i win then its almost daily for couple of days

I definitely have bad days of card.
I play mostly tournament, and sometimes I dont have playable card for a couple of steps, and if I would have play the bad card I would have lost anyway at all the showdown I did see.
Somehow I have good runs where i can play a couple of hands in a row but usually it s not so many hand per hours.

I'm also under belief that there isn't any "outside greater" influence that defines hot or cold streaks. It is up to you and how you handle those situations.

Yeah for sure, I've been on a very bad down swing this week
I'm always the one on the wrong side of everything, getting cooler ed left and right, losing with the best hand all the time, it's just like that. You just have to keep it going

I definitely believe that hot and cold streaks exist in poker. Variance naturally creates extended periods where the cards either work for you or completely run against you. However, the real key as a player is how you manage these momentum shifts. During a good run, you need to maximize your profitability by staying focused and extracting as much value as possible without becoming overly reckless. On the other hand, during a bad run, the main priority is emotional control and bankroll protection—you must discipline yourself to minimize losses and avoid tilt at all costs. Managing these swings effectively is what truly separates consistent players over the long run
