Most poker players accept that to be a good or even a great poker player you need both Skill and Luck.

imagine you are in a final table a have AA and BB is chip leader and goes all in.... and nobody calls, it just you to call... you Fold or Call ?? I´m Going to tell you the rigth answer.... It depends how lucky is threath you at that moment if you had have some bad luck in some hands better fold and wait, if you had have good results at that time better call. Luck is like sub atomic particles, it is all about chance, probability, momentum..

So you mean it basically all comes down to this?

Luck is for suckers but I could use a healthy dose of it because since coming back from a very long break man do I suck. Bad run of beats compounded by utter bonehead plays at the wrong time every game. The beats were totally avoidable in nearly every instance with a little reflection. My advice on luck. Improve your game and your luck will change. Right now I'm ruminating about bad luck but I know it's because I suck.

It makes me smile to read so many posts above where people show such an adversity for the concept of luck, yet chose poker over all other games. Folks, there are plenty of games where luck is not a factor, and the winner is determined 100% by skill.

If you value skill so much and detest luck, what are you doing playing poker?

In my opinion having Luck is Essential to be a winner, lets talk about experiences, definitions, ways to call it, and ways to deal and manage it.. :icon_cycl

I think this could be very interesting and we can try others people methods they share..

This is a very controversial issue in my point of view.
There are very bad players who have had excellent results, and very good players who have not had those same expressive results.
I can't give a verdict on luck in poker!

Seems to me luck comes and goes in waves (like a lot of other things)

Most people experience both lucky and unlucky streaks ?

Some days it just doesn't pay to play,,,,
sadly like today :(

I just played almost four hours in a 50 cent MTT for $200 GTD

For much of the game, I saw the same player playing any two and knocking out opponent after opponent. I managed to get to the final table despite barely getting any good hands and made it to 4th place, while the same player was leading by about 8-10x the stacks of those who remained. I went out K5 < 74.. he hit one of his cards, I believe a 7.

So I looked this player up on sharkscope. Of course he took 1st place. His account is 3 days old.

I don't believe this kind of phenomenon is luck at all. Something else is going on and I strongly recommend players to study their games closely if you are not doing so already.

I believe luck isnt very important. Dont get me wrong, we all need a little luck now and then but a good player relies on skill to progress in poker. If you rely on luck you may have good results sometimes but it will always come back to bite you. I good player can have bad luck and will keep grinding his way back up. A bad player having good luck builds a false sense of confidence and can really cause some damage financially when that luck runs out.

Agreed

I agree with this post quite a bit, Chess is a great example of a game where you can study, implement what you have learned, and see your results. Poker is a bit more skewed, you could have studied thousands of hours for a tournament that someone else simply showed up for and you could get crushed. Make the best decisions of what you can and leave the rest to ... well .. luck.

I think sometimes we overate AA/KK - it is, after all, still only one pair and therefore, is it worth going all in for pre-flop? Maybe against one, but as soon as you in a multi pot, you really are relying on a bit of luck to carry you through.

Luck is a by-product of hard work. Winning consistently has nothing to do with luck. Might get a hand here or there, everyone does, you wont find success there though.

I absolutely agree with you.
Patience and a little effort!

Interesting idea. I also drew attention. The less my bankroll, the faster beat me.

I believe that poker sites will decide the outcome of the hand. On the basis of the amount paid in rake. It's one of those things algorithm. No one can prove or disprove it. But I have always been a big success after the deposit and less when I shot the money. This is my opinion, and some would say that I'm stupid, that, too, is probably true.

skill has its value in poker yes however it should not be considered the main factor of the game-i would say poker is made up of 60% luck and 40% skill

I think that I have Luck. When I was in live casino with my friend and he played poker , I was sitting always next to him and he was the winner all the time.

Surely we can all admit that there's luck at the poker tables - and all of us from time to time get to have our turn in the sun -- but at the end of the day, there would be no professional players in the field if this game were mostly luck. Poker is indeed a skill game and those who work the hardest at it every chance they get, those players have the edge because they simply want it more.

Well said! Luck certainly rears its head from time to time. Sometimes it’s there to save me and others to beat me when I have the best hand, but I’ve played enough to know that there is skill involved. Think about being at a table and who you hate playing against because they are always ahead or winning. Lots of times it’s because they know what they are doing and that is what makes you uncomfortable.

Luck is something, effort is much more. It is the only way to achieve what you want safely. In poker it is also applicable.

Luck is an important part of a poker game. There are days when you don’t get lucky. Then you’d better not sit down at the table.:(
