Depends on the player. The VAST majority of poker players are gambling when they play. The vast minority of players can call it a sport, same as rock paper scissors is a sport.

Not sport, not gambling. Card&desk game category for me.

I consider sport, what involves high level of physical activity. The gambling is totally out of control, you make your bet and wait. In poker you have the chance to influence it later, even if you've already made a bet, put some money in pot, bought a tourney buyin.

Not a sport, not even close. No athleticism is required to play poker.

For me it is a sport that you do not have total control over. You may never consider it a 100% sport, but a variant.

All depends on how you like to play? Do you deposit hundred's of Dollars and play till it's all gone? Then it's Gambling.
If you play free-roll's and use the site's money to play, then it's a sport.
I hate all forms of Gambling and never have made a deposit, I don't even play the Lottery, but I have been playing Poker for over 20 years and still play for Free!

When the fun Stops, STOP!

I'm not sure if it can really be defined as either, but I could never get behind poker being labeled a sport.

It's a difficult question, and one not easily answered. I wonder if it's really necessary to make a difference?

Poker is a game that is played for sport and gambling. And like any other sport you ot trying to beat your opponent by scoring more points but in poker you are trying to win by taking your opponent's money....gambling?... heck yeah!

it's a game of skill with some luck sprinkled in with small doses imo. The cream always rises to the top, some faster than others.

Its both, however, I lean more towards strategy game. Unfortunately, you must use money as the leverage, and that is what makes it gambling. I wish that people who were not into poker could see the non gamble side and see it for the extremely complex and interesting game that it is. I feel this perception of the game is also what makes it alienating for those of us that have a lot of friends that did not get into poker, as we move deeper into the game, we surround ourselves with more poker people and less non poker players.

Poker is definitely not a sport. It's gambling. A loser gives money (or something else) to a winner, via a game of chance. That's it. Yes, I know it's also a game of skill, but a skillful player can still lose, due to the chance element, to an unskilled player.

There are some elements of sports, for example, when a championship is held, but this is gambling. I think it's impossible to say that this is a direct sport, but with elements of sports, then yes.

For me it's just entertainment and gambling, but for the pros out there it is probably a sport because for them it's all about the skill and strategy.

Poker is my preferred casino game because the casino gets the same 'rake' no matter who wins, so that removes them from having any vested interest. I view the game as more of a sport because the ultimate objective is to be the last man 'standing' to rake the pot.
