PokerStars restricted my account during a $5.50 tournament while I was 1st (Resolved)

There is another complication: my registered email address is currently experiencing delivery issues, which I explained to support. However, I’m repeatedly being told that updates will be sent to that same email address.
That is very unlucky, since they might not allow you to change your email adress in the middle of an investigation. With hindsight you should have updated your contact information, as soon as this email adress began to experience delivery issues. You can have a @gmail.com adress completely free, and gmail never has delivery issues. Or at least I have not experienced this for almost 2 decades, since I opened mine. Maybe you can solve those delivery issues by clearing up space by deleting old emails? Or contact the provider for advice.

I totally understand. But as soon as everything is clarified on the same day, the documents are sent; everything is done according to protocol and is still not resolved. I simply went through 3-4 generations of different chats explaining the same thing about my email and they all ended the chat saying “Rest assured, we'll send you more information by email”.
Its not just a question of looking at some documents to confirm your adress etc. Your account has been flagged by their system for potential T&C violation. So now the security team needs to go through everything including your playing history to see, what the resolution should be. And as others have said, this tend to take weeks rather than days. Talking to a chat bot will not speed it up. So as already adviced just be patient and play somewhere else in the meantime.

Its not only that. Its also, that he began playing the tournament from Brasil, and then suddenly it looked like he was playing from Canada, or whatever location the VPN was set up to show. And since its impossible to travel from Brasil to Canada in a few minutes, this looks like someone else was now playing his account, which is also not allowed. This is a big deal in high-stakes tournaments, where a stable might have a final table specialist or a heads-up specialist to take over from the other players, when they have done the "bread-and-butter" work of getting him there.

PokerStars do not owe him anything for getting blinded out in that $5.5 tournament. The chips went to other players, not PokerStars, and its 100% the fault of OP, that this happened. I once accidentally clicked the 24 hour self exclusion "panic button", which we have here in Sweden, which caused me to blind out in tournaments worth $40 or something. They did not give me any refund for that, nor did I ask for it. My advice to OP is to be patient and polite, cooperate with PokerStars investigation and not even mention anything about the EV he lost by getting blinded out.
Yeah I get it, it's good that PokerStars security flags things like this, otherwise this would be abused. I just think it could be accident more often than scam when it just happens once in like a decade because not everyone checks or knows about IP addresses and also VPNs are so common these days. I have had to few times make a panic login back from another device to avoid blinding out and I don't really use those devices ever so easily could have happened to me.

Looks like you placed in 8th position for $11.85 (8 paid so you just managed to pop the bubble). The other player on your table (who had the second biggest stack on your table in your screenshot), maaakii placed 7th.

7th.

View attachment 418954

Thanks for checking the results. I wasn’t aware that I had finished 8th for $11.85, so I appreciate you looking that up.
l

However, the main issue is still unresolved.

I’ve already submitted all the requested documents, completed the identity verification and photos, provided the requested information, and updated my registration details. I’ve also contacted support multiple times and explained my situation to several different agents.

Despite doing everything requested, my account is still under review, and I haven’t received a clear resolution or timeframe. The communication process has been particularly frustrating because support keeps telling me that updates will be sent to my registered email, which I’ve already explained is experiencing delivery issues.

I understand why PokerStars needs to investigate unusual login activity, and I’m willing to cooperate fully. I was physically in Brazil throughout the incident, and I suspect Opera’s built-in VPN may have caused the location discrepancy. I wasn’t trying to bypass geographical restrictions or let anyone else use my account.

l
I’m not claiming that being chip leader with 14 players remaining guaranteed me the $100 first-place prize. That’s not my point.

My point is that I’ve done everything requested of me, but the situation remains unresolved. I’m still waiting for the security review to be completed and for PokerStars to communicate a clear decision.

If anyone has experienced a similar situation, particularly after submitting all the requested verification documents, I’d appreciate hearing how it was eventually resolved.

l
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the discussion.

Its only been 3 days, and as others have explained, it is normal, that it takes a bit longer than that. So just relax and do something other than playing on PokerStars for a while. Hopefully everything will eventually be solved and the restrictions on your account lifted 🙂

Well at least PokerStars have great security, as we can see from this case, where they instantly restricted your account, when it appeared like, you were letting someone else play from it in the middle of a tournament. By contrast GG Poker recently had a big cheating scandal, where someone hacked into the system and were able to see their equity in the hand, even when they were not all-in. One player was banned and some confiscated money distributed, but there might have been more cases, that they never admitted to.

There is also a site like WPT Global, which apparently does not even catch onto it, when someone living in India or Cambodia use a VPN to pretend to be in Andorra while playing, and likely created multible accounts as well. And there were bot rings operating there, which it took them almost a year to do something about. So I am pretty happy to play on a site, where security actually do, what security is supposed to do. But of course it sucks, when you are the one coming under investigation, because you inadvertently logged on via a VPN in the middle of a tournament.

Well thats at least something, and nobody know, how he would have done, if he had still been sitting in. Being the chip leader with 14 left does not mean, we are going to win the tournament. Its also possible, he would have run KK into AA, lost most of his chips and then lost the rest in another hand sending him out of the tournament without even cashing. So as I said already, he should not expect or even discuss compensation. If they give him something, thats an act of courtesy, because they think, he is a good costumer and want to keep him happy.

Pokerstars represented approximately 80-90% of my bankroll. Now they represent 11 dollars from a frustrated tournament result

That might be. But it does not change the fact, that a poker security team is not a first response team. They are not just sitting at the fire station and waiting to hear the alarm, so they can put on their gear and run to the fire engine to rescue someone. They have other cases to work on, that came in before yours, and thats why you need to wait. If all your poker money is on PokerStars, then take a break from poker and watch Netflix or something🙂

Not directly a good answer to this incident, but this example is a big reason,
why playing online poker on a battery device is no convenient way to play online poker.
I hope the issue will be resolved soon.

Well i basically play daily on my phone with zero issues.

But of course OP had charging problems exactly at this crucial point of the tournament. So he had to switch to a laptop of another person.

Personally I've never been a fan of Pokerstars sticking their nose into my computer. If cheating is an issue, I'd prefer they focus on the big fish rather than wasting their time tying to hunt down every little technical infraction. They have limited human resources, and by spending valuable time on matters that amount to pennies (if that) they have by definition less time to spend on the sophisticated, big money scams. It's basic math and shows a lack respect for their bread and butter customers.

Mistakes happen all the time. Power and Internet outages happen all the time, especially in less modern parts of the world. People use VPN's all over the world every day for legitimate reasons. People use poker software tools all the time in legitimate ways. Just throwing out rules that say "thou shall not ... etc., etc." then rigidly forcing the little guy to become super user just to play a low stakes poker tournament isn't very customer focused.

The big money scammers just get even more sophisticated, while Stars is distracted with petty ante rules enforcement.

Yes... a laptop that logged in on a browser that went through a VPN. For 99.9999% of the rest of the time it'd be just fine

I think it actually shows a lot of respect for honest players that they do their best to have a clean site for their customers, wish I could play there👍

Exactly. They are also one of the few sites, that still strictly enforce the one account per player rule. On many other sites you can have accounts on different skins, as long as you only play from one of them at a time. Which mean, that one day you might be playing against "LuckyGuy69", and the next day against "Imagirl72", and this is actually the same player rendering your notes or HUD-data useless.

Or sites allow players to change their name once a year, or they are completely anonymous, which is a heaven for colluders, bot users and other cheaters. For me PokerStars is absolutely the gold standard of online poker, and the only really negative thing is, that they have very high rake for many microstakes tournaments especially single table SnGs.

My goodness. These things are distractions. Pokerstars is the one and only company I know of that takes a deep dive into your computer without specific permission. I keep notes on players too, but smart players vary their style. It's that simple. Your notes are useless against smart payers. So who are you trying to compete against? The dumb ones who would rather shove than play a hand out? You don't need more than a five minute history to pick up on these.

Keep the bots out - absolutely! But they too are easy to pick up on without invading your and my computers.

I love anonymous play! It forces me to focus on my game, rather than what I think I know about a player I took a note on a year or two ago.

HUDs? If they are allowed, why are they okay? They give a technological advantage to those who have them, and not to others.

Unibet is considered one of the safest sites with lots of tackling of cheating and they are completely anon. 5 aliases per 5 tournaments if you want. That's the way I like it. They also allow VPN but obviously they still track suspicious behavior.

Just sad that Kindred sold it so it's all downhill from now on.

Pretty sure lots of sites do that including GG Poker, who just announced a complete ban against any kind of third party software while playing on their platform. Which of course they need to "take a deep dive into your computer without specific permission" to enforce.

Never played there but would be very surpriced, if Unibet is one of the safest sites. As the name suggest, its mainly a betting site, and poker is kind of an afterthought, which they dont put much effort into at all. PokerStars on the other hand started a as poker site, which again is literally in the name.

You should be part of the PokerStars support team, man. Seriously. If I had been informed like this from the beginning, a lot of things could have been avoided. Because in those moments, it stops being just a verification problem and becomes a test of patience and self-control in the face of a series of bad events in a general context. Stress takes over, and what was supposed to be understood as a high level of security starts to seem like personal abuse.

The problem wasn't playing with low battery. The problem was that, when trying to charge, the iphone got moisture in the USB-C input, preventing it from being charged. Immediately the tournament paused. I tried to fix it and couldn't do it and went straight to try another alternative. I'm not saying that I was right, but that from the moment I had to activate their support for the second time in 1 year, I was intensely worn out with multiple chat openings to the point of not being able to even try anymore

Be surprised, although it is true that poker is only 2% of Unibet's revenue they are still the most secure site after PokerStars probably. They don't have community anymore but there was tons of confirmation of this there where they deep dove into lot of the collusion cases publicly. They also put lot of effort into the poker.

And... here is the biggest thing

Are you ready?

Their head of poker is employee from pre-Flutter and pre-Amaya PokerStars who actually took a paycut to start the Unibet Poker.
Proof:
He also explains some of the mechanism here. He was still around at least 2 years ago in the Unibet community if I remember correctly, however lot of the stuff he talks about has changed over the years. Unibet is on the downhill but I still rank it number 2.

I dont think, this would normally be a problem. It was just the VPN, that triggered their security system. So next time, or when this happen to someone else, just be sure, that the new decide is not connecting via a VPN.

It took 4 days, which is really not that much. Recently I had problems logging on to PokerStars due to a PIN-code system, that was set up here in Sweden, and stopped working for me. I think, it lasted for 8 days, and I just played somewhere else, until it was resolved. Sometimes you just need to be a bit patient.

You 100% should. They already been adjusting to the licensed market regulations. They used to have high rake but extreme rakeback for casual players but now they have extremely low rake but sadly destroyed their rakeback system for 99% people (since most people can't take rakeback anyways). But they kept their rake policy on under 1€ tourneys, no rake at all! The skill level has increased dramatically as result of these changes but still pretty soft yeah.

Too bad about the new change to 6-max format as default, very few 9-max per table tourneys anymore... hope it changes back soon.
