I am done with this thread for a while.Currently I sit on $383 or so at Bodog, but I'm in a situation where I must withdraw some to pay bills:(.

I am gonna try to roll up my PS account in the meantime and play the CC tourney at Bodog every Friday.Hopefully I will be able to be back here within the next month or so.

Good luck to all of ya and it seems like you are all heading in the right direction.

Progress Update

Day 42: 579% ($11,573)
Day 43: 609% ($12,172)
Day 44: 629% ($12,587)

Today's first session started out pretty badly. I got absolutely no respect from anyone, everybody called my postflop bets down, and whenever they had a worse hand they managed to make a better one by the river. I hate it when bad play pays off.
The second session was much better, I managed to take down a few pots, so the day ends with profit.

I think the profitability line in my graph is going to be off. Since I doubled the limits, the graph should increase faster now than it did during the first 40 or so days.

Hi Everyone - I'm kind of new to the site, but it seems like this is a really nice community.

I want to start building my bankroll the right way - my friend transferred $20 into my PokerStars account last December, and over the last year I built it up to $400 before cashing half out and losing the rest due to spurts of tilt playing in higher stakes heads up games.

So now I find myself back near where I started...about 30 bucks! But this time, I want to manage my bankroll right!

Mainly I've been playing 1/2 cent ring games and 1 dollar, 9 man S&Gs. So far I seem to be gaining but very slowly! Does anyone have any advice for what to play to get my bankroll moving?

You should play whatever you're most comfortable with. Money can be made in all types of poker. Variance is going to be the smallest in cash games, higher in SNGs and much higher still in multi-table tournaments.

When looking at your gain, you should look at it in terms of percentage. If you go from $30 to $45 then that's a gain of 50%!

Day 41: 268% (353.37)
Day 42: 267% (352.13)
Day 43: 289% (381.15)

I think today is the first time since I’ve been posting to this thread when I’ve not had a single bad beat worthy of mention all day. It was a longer than usual session too, which makes it all the more remarkable. After steady (but small) losses during the first hour or so, things picked up and I hardly ever had a downturn all day – looks like Father Christmas came early!

Chris, if that happens, I will change the best-fit line to best-fit curve, either for everyone or as a separate graph.

The way we will know is when the best-fit line is consistently below your bankroll curve.

Well, that dotted line is sucking my green line back down. Variance by any other name is still a loss today. Things will get a little worse now that I will no longer be getting first deposit bonus. Better look for another site!

I had a long talk with my green line. Told it, "Fear the dotted line! If it gets close, RUN LIKE THE WIND!" Seems to have worked.

Actually, there were no 2/4 tables I wanted to play after the Full Tilt Poker shutdown. There was a 3/6 that looked good, but I was a wee bit under rolled for the move to 3/6. (Rolled OK to play, just wasn't going to move up yet from 2/4 by my own guideline.) Sat in anyway and played uber tight for a round or two. There was a blithering idiot at the table who would play any one paint, 64o, and once called a raise with 72o. Couldn't pass that up, and now I am securely rolled for 3/6! Stayed until he lost it all.

I note that pasting my graph directly from Cheetah's program changes the prior graphs, too. Before the last two times I had been pasting it into Paint and uploading the jpeg file. Guess I should do that if I want to anchor a graph.

The best fit line should be a log fit based on the mathematics. Either that or make the Y axis log. Then constant percent increases will be linear.

It seems like those are wild swings in your bankroll, Art. This day each ring game was 10% of your roll, was it not? And the MTT was another 5%? If I calculate correctly, you had 25% in play at once, which is five times what is generally thought to be prudent.

As an aside, that first "incredibly bad beat" was a pair of eights going to a pair of aces since you both had the board trips. That is not a bad beat, that is a beat.
Yeah, my BR is just a a little too small for $.02/$.05 ring games but honestly I can't do the $.01/$.02 games, its not even because their boring, its just I end up losing more money sitting at $.01/$.02 then at $.02/$.05. Plus I feel really comfortable at $.02/$.05.

Here's the progress as of lately:
Day 1: 117% ($59.48)
Day 2: 123% ($62.85)
Day 3: 85% ($43.45)
Day 4: 96% ($48.95)
Day 5: 110% ($55.85)
Day 6: 138% ($70.04) - Nothing to really say, good day overall, a few low points but nothing major.

Day 7: 114% ($57.85) - Lent $5 to my gf's BR and then had a really bad day at the cash games. I must of caught flopatitus or something, I couldn't catch a card at all throughout the whole night! I seriously stopped raising good cards like AK AQ etc etc because I would never flop anything with them.

Day 8: 138% ($69.98) - Ring games were pretty much the same as day 7, couldn't catch too many cards. Since the ring was pretty slow I played a $1.20 SNG. Not playing one in a while I realized how retarded people actually played. People were showing down the worst hands, going to the flop and calling raises with cards as bad as 9 2 off. I thought I was for sure going to win when I got to heads up because I had a 3 to 1 chip lead. The other person ends up getting lucky a few all-in's because I again couldn't flop anything and I placed in 2nd. Then I did something I probably shouldn't have but took a stab at it anyways. I did a 180 person SNG with a buy in of $4. A little too much for my BR but I wanted to take a stab at it to see how'd I'd do. Pretty much the same thing as the $1.20 SNG's. Most people calling down the worst hands just doing plain dumb things. In the first 30 min. 80 people were already knocked off. At around 40 players it got real nerve racking because I was playing low stack pretty much the whole time and people were getting really tight. I ended up making a pretty big come back a few times and made it to the final table and won a decent amount of money to bring my BR back up :D I think I'll do one of these 180 people SNG's every week or so.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to update everyone and tell them what was going on.

I hear ya on that one. Those 1/2 cent games are almost as bad as the play money games.5-8 people call any preflop raise and hang out to the end to see who has the best hand.5-8 donks win vs. one good player, sadly.

I also know how it is at the very bottom game. I think I would do exactly as you did and move where I felt comfortable. Boltneck convinced me that the roll needed for multi-tabling is not exactly the same as double limit, too.

I decided to put aside some for MTTs every once in a while, too. Have not had the time for one yet. When I finish some outside jobs, maybe then.

Ok so since I started with $20 when I first began, I'll do my bankroll with that.

Today can be Day 1
Day 1: 119% (23.83)

I did actually drop to 20 due to some very bad beats when I bit off more than I could chew by multitabling 3 1/2 cent ring games. So this morning I concentrated on playing just 1 table, and playing it very tight since people there usually play like pretty crazily. The system worked pretty well, and even though I still got donked out sometimes, things like getting the nut flush with 5 people in the pot usually paid off incredibly well!

I just need to be more careful with my management and stop trying to do things like multitable when I only have 20 dollars to begin with!

Day 42: 267% (352.13)
Day 43: 289% (381.15)
Day 44: 299% (393.99)

It hardly seems appropriate to describe the modest profit for the day as a disaster, but that’s how I feel about it right now. I was rivered twice in the last 15 minutes of play, with pots $32 and a $37 respectively. If I’d taken either of them, the results for the day would have been so much better. That’s poker for you – but it’s makes it no less frustrating!

Progress Update

Day 43: 609% ($12,172)
Day 44: 629% ($12,587)
Day 45: 679% ($13,574)

Another good day at the cash tables even though I lost an entire stack with a bad call.

Today's $100+8 lasted about 10 minutes. This time I got busted with the 2nd nut flush vs. the nut flush. It was a shorthanded tournament too, so I was kinda bummed about that one.

Day 1 Update:

363% (72.66)

Got pretty lucky in a $1.50 limit MTT (I never play limit but wanted to try it out) and finished in 5th for a $50 payout. Hopefully I can continue upwards from here!

Also, it was nice of CC member pantin007 to cheer me on for a large part of the tourney!

Am I seeing this right? By the end of Day 1 you increased your BR by 263 % ? or is it Day 2? Either way, nice job in that MTT. That's one hell of an increase to start off with. :)

Well it's sort of day 1. I just arbitrarily picked today as day 1 because almost 1 year ago my friend gave me 20 dollars on PokerStars and in that time I've managed to get my BR up to $400, cash $200, and lose the rest back to the $20 starting point. So I figured today would be day 1 since I'm back at the start and new to CC! I might have actually posted yesterday as day 1 earlier in the thread but honestly I can't remember. All I know is tomorrow is Day 2 but I probably won't actually get to play really since I'll be out of town all day.

Do you guys actually count every day, even ones you don't play? Or do you count them like each week = 1 day?

I'm pretty sure everyone is doing 1day = 1 day. If you did 1week=1day, then it would be swingy and the data would misrepresent. After done playing for the "night" I log it, count it as a day, even if it spilled over, far past midnight.

IMO it doesn't matter what or how you log days you didn't play because it won't affect anything really. I think I put hyphens in or "no play".

I've decided that posting here didn't affect my play.

I'm just inching up day after day in the BR at best, which I'm not enjoying at all. I look back at a post last week where someone said playing poker was work, but I'd have to look at it more like torture at this point. I'm consistently too conservative in sngs, which doesn't help. 20 days ago I was barely in the negative for career sngos and nothing has changed, I'm consistently not gaining or losing $.
As far as the rings, I inch along, occasionally hit a snag here or there, but inch back. After today it might be a few fortnights before I am able to regain internet connection to play and post again. GL Everyone, Godspeed, May the force be with you...etc. Hopefully I'll be back. Ciao motha f'ers. ;)
