Poker is a mix of both gambling and strategy, but the balance depends on the timeframe. In the short term, luck plays a big role because cards are random and variance is unavoidable. Over the long term, however, poker clearly becomes a strategy game, where skill, decision-making, psychology, and discipline determine results. Unlike pure gambling games, players compete against each other, not the house, which allows better players to consistently win. So while money is wagered and luck exists, poker rewards strategy far more than chance over time.

I've been playing long enough to know that without a doubt it's gambling at the lower buy-ins. At the very high levels you're playing against known entities, so you can use that knowledge to fashion specific strategies against those specific players.

Poker is a lot about study and strategy; otherwise, we wouldn't have great players always winning. But there's also the luck factor, which is called variance.

Poker blends both gambling and strategy, but strategy plays a far larger role in the long run.
Chance influences individual hands, yet skilled players consistently outperform beginners because they make better decisions based on probability, psychology, and risk management.
Over many games, strategic thinking reduces the impact of luck and turns poker into a game of skill.
Still, the gambling element remains because money is at stake and outcomes can

It depends on how the person plays. Some people play strategically, and some people play as if they were playing bingo.

Poker is much more than strategy (yes, I agree that poker is not a gambling game). Poker is our life, and every tournament is a stage on which we play the leading role.

It's a card game and Age of Empires is a strategy game, but both can be gambling ,as well as anything else you bet money on

it's the strategy, most of the time.
:)

Take a look at our forum, we already have quite a few members raking more than $10K or more, starting with our freerolls, and using really good strategy to login really late in the game, and trying to double up asap, then he is almost garantied in the money.
:)

If you're just freerollers, who think that any 2 cards can win, then it's .....
You be the judge.

Poker is not gambling and only strategy at freerolls. When you start to deposit your money, than it is gambling with strategy.😄

Let me hear some good saying from the OG’s here.!
Is it possible to play a game of chance with a strategic approach? Of course, it is. Is it possible to be a strategist when playing games of chance? It is possible if you are a professional player. Poker is primarily a game of chance, but what kind of game it will be for you depends entirely on you and your approach to the game.

I thought it was gambling before I played. After 2 years of playing, it’s strategy now.

Yes, it’s a game of strategy, but it doesn’t guarantee winning in the short term — only in the long run.

I’d say poker sits right between gambling and strategy, but what you do with it determines which side dominates. In the short term, luck and variance can make it feel like pure gambling, especially over a small sample size.

In the long run, though, strategy clearly takes over. Decisions around hand selection, position, bet sizing, and bankroll management consistently separate winning players from losing ones. If poker were only gambling, we wouldn’t see the same players winning year after year.

So for me, poker is a strategy game that uses randomness, not a random game with a bit of strategy added.
