GG Poker variances are somewhat crazier than other apps...in my experience...

Yes you're playing a turbo high variance bingo lottery. You got the result that should be expected. The only games higher variance are all-in or fold types and zoom types.

Cheers!!!
I disagree, the variance I am talking about is due to bad players getting to more rivers not a function of the games I play in (I play the "bingo" games on other sites and see lower variance and less "crazy" spots).

I'm not a high roller that's for sure, the highest I've played at GG is $75 buy-in MTT and I saw a lot of bad plays there too, novice type stuff - that led to high variance spots where you might not expect.

I think the point that more players = more fish = more "crazy" variance, holds.

The worst of the worst players make way more bad calls creating higher variance. freerolls players aren't any better then play money players. Fact is I knew play money players from 21+ years ago who are better then many of today's freeroll players. So disagree all you want that only makes you wrong in my 21+ years experience.

This point I agree with. As it basically equals seeing more hands equals more variance specially when you consider more players equals more bad players and more bad calls. Back when Pokerstars had the 1st overall spot by far and had 100,000-200,000+ players online everyday everyone had the same complaints about PS as they now do about GG Poker.

Cheers!!!

I find it extremely unlikely, that players in low value public freerolls on other sites should be any better than those on GG Poker.

Maybe because it was a special featured tournament, and some people had satellited in to it from promotional tickets or whatever. I also played with some real fish, when I satellited into the $215 Sunday Million Anniversary game on PokerStars a few years ago. But that most certainly does not mean, that this is typical for $215 MTTs on Stars, or that Stars is a soft site in general.

My experience with GG Poker is still somewhat limited, but from what I have seen in $5-10 tournaments and 25NL cash games, I would certainly not call the site soft. Which is completely natural, since the high volume is exactly, what every grinder in the world is looking for. If you are looking for soft games, you generally need to go to smaller sites like for instance 888 Poker.

I play enough of them on enough sites to inform you that this is the case. Again nothing magical here, just more players at GG = more bad ones (particularly at the 'bottom of the barrel').

This is the issue, you are not addressing the OPs experience at GG, I'm sure it does get less fishy/crazy as you move up the stakes at GG, but that doesn't answer the question "Why does GG appear to have "crazier" variance {implied: at the stakes I play at] compared to other sites?"

This could be the case, especially because they hand out free tickets every day to people for just logging on to the site. PokerStars on the other hand largely got rid of this "bottom of the barrel" segment by cancelling freerolls and also somewhat raising the bar with the cheapest SnGs now being $0.5 games.

I actually addressed this much earlier in the thread. And basically variance will appear "crazier", if there are more hands, that get to showdown and especially a multiway showdown. Which can either be due to loose play or the structure of the game. For instance GG Pokers Battle Royal will see a lot of multiway showdowns on the final table, not (only) because of bad play, but because there is a huge incentive to knock someone out and win their bounty.

So if OP play Mystery Battle Royal on GG Poker and 32-man SnGs on PokerStars, then the variance will appear "crazier" on GG Poker. Not because of the platform or the quality of play, but simply because of the different structure of the games played. Even I felt, that the variance was pretty insane, when I played the first Mystery Battle Royal games :)

Great, congratulations, but that doesn't change the fact that this discussion got blown out of proportion. Let's move on. The guy who spends all his time refuting flat-earthers is just as much to blame as they are. I think that’s the point you still haven't grasped regarding why I didn't like how things played out here.

This is actually a really good point. No other poker site, I have played on, does this, and for me its with a distance the most annoying feature of GG Poker. When I am all-in before the river, I just want the cards to be dealt and get it over with. I have zero need to drag it out before knowing, if my hand held, or if my opponent hit their ace or flush on the river. And as you say, GG Poker do this to mess with peoples heads. They want their customers to become gamblers rather than poker players, because in this way they can make more profit for the owners of the site.

Are the customers playing against the site now?

I personally never see the delayed river card. First off I streamline all of my settings and I also don't sit and watch a table to see how the cards turn over. I might go back and check the HH after if it's relevant but otherwise I don't bother to watch. And if by some chance I am sitting there thru a delayed reveal of the river card, it doesn't affect me in any way at all. How would that make me want to gamble more? I might guess what the card is when I see it partially revealed,

In the casino section yes. And as you probably know, the more poker, people play, the more rake the site earn. Especially in fast games like Spins or Battle Royal, that are fantastic rake machines.

Is there a way to turn this off? I have been looking for it, but did not find it. This is a genuine question, so please share, if there is a way to turn off this annoying and time wasting feature.

Its kind of hard to not see it, if the table is visible, which it is, if for instance you are 2-tabling Battle Royal.

By making you focus on results rather than your decisions. Why do you think, they have this feature? Everything about GG Poker is designed to attract gamblers and turn people into gamblers. Thats how they got so big.

Battle Royal... is that poker? Never tried it. It must be profitable though or else you wouldn't be playing it (or slayerv1fan/Josh Hoesel < former SnG pro, former Spins pro).
Most sites have moved towards higher variance, 'less poker' type games because this is what A LOT of the recreational gumbies want to play. No doubt they're not as outclassed in these games (or at least they are probably thinking this way).

I don't think GG turns people into gamblers. That'd be like saying Molson breweries &/or Budweiser turns people into alcoholics. Doesn't work that way (imo and the vast majority of the world's scientific community).

I fail to see how a river card rolling off with a delay would make anyone focus more on results vs. decisions. Does it do that to you? I know a couple streamers who will occasionally use this for a heightened viewing experience, while attempting to predict the card from reading the pips as they are slowly exposed on the side of the card ("Could be the 8h... or is it the 10h?!?!?!")

I think how they got so big was on a number of factors. It'd take too long to explain it

I only started playing on GG Poker less than 2 month ago, and I have only played around 140 of these Battle Royal games, so I have no idea, what my long term winrate would be. I do however think, the rake is extremely high and with the added lottery element from the bounties I assume, that grinders rely heavily on money from a leaderboard and/or rakeback to make a profit. I dont know, how this works, because its not offered here in Sweden due to our regulations.

I get 20% rakeback from a first deposit bonus, and I kind of dought, this is enough to overcome the 8% rake in the long run. I mainly played them, because its the only SnG, that GG Poker offer, other than Spins, and I wanted to give it a try. Until the recent software update I also could not play more than 2 tables without the poker client becoming extremely laggy. Which made it very unattractive for me to play MTTs or cash games on the site. But with Battle Royal 2-tabling is acceptable due to the fast Rush phase.

I dont think, I will be playing them much going forward though. It makes more sense for me to contend for the SnG leaderboard on ACR Poker, and I have pretty good results in 32-man SnGs on PokerStars, so it also makes more sense for me to continue playing a game, I know, I am doing well in. The only real advantage of the Battle Royal game is, that activity is so high, so you never need to wait more than a few minutes to get 2 tables going.

Sure and GG Poker have taken it further than almost any other site by not even offering people the choise of less gambling oriented traditional SnGs. But Mystery Bounties are popular. On Stars Mystery Bounty MTTs attract larger fields than similar PKOs, which again attract larger fields then similar traditional MTTs. The "Big" is now among the smaller field MTTs, that run on Stars, which I guess is kind of funny :)

It might be an exaggeration to say, that GG Poker turn people into gamblers. But everything about the site is designed to enhance gambling addiction. And this is not just my opinion. This is something, that several professional poker players have said. Expect of course those, who work as shills for GG Poker.

I am already an experienced poker player, so for me its just an annoyance, especially because it slow down the game. But the topic of this thread is, that OP feel, the variance on GG Poker is "crazier" than on other sites. And unless you think, GG Poker is rigged (which I dont), then there must be some other reason for this feeling.

And the slow river card reveal might be one of those reasons, since its whole purpose is to create a larger emotional reaction, when the river card change the winner. This might especially be the case, if OP play games like the Battle Royal or Spins, because there are many hands, that are all-in preflop in these hyper turbo formats. Whereas if you play cash games and to some extend MTTs, there are far less hands, where stacks go in before the river. And most people play Battle Royal and Spins on GG Poker, if nothing else to use the free daily tickets, they hand out for them.

Yes I agree, that there are multible reasons for their success. But being succesfull does not mean, that everything you do, is good for the public. And I think, there is good reason to be critical of several things, that GG Poker do. Not allowing players an easy way to track their results in different games, not allowing players to withdraw their own money due to an undefined "sufficient gameplay requirement", threatening to ban cash players for "bum hunting", even though they have now introduced random seating in cash games and so on and so forth.

I play micro-stakes (around $5), and some days like yesterday, the strings of bad beats GG deals out are unbelievable. 90% of them happen on the river, when I have the opponent dominated, *that* card shows up!
It might just be variance with that cruel twist they seem to love serving up. If I didn't love playing poker, I certainly would have quit!
Despite all this happening frequently, it’s still possible to get some good results there.
Sites I’ve been playing less lately, like ACR and WPT, are pretty similar at least at the micro-stakes level.. I frequently lose to weird hands. The kind where a massive bad beat explodes out of nowhere.. It’s so frustrating to get into a great spot only to have that specific river card hit, with opponents holding less than 10% equity taking down the pot frequently.
I can't say the sites are rigged, but it might be "normal" to see terrible players repeatedly succeed with crazy moves, becoming the chip leader and knocking out multiple players with highly questionable plays! I hope it’s just variance and that we aren't living out a movie plot like *The Other Side of Poker*, where these scenarios and certain players have their scenes scripted in advance. o_O

Could it be that feature on GG Poker, where the river card is revealed very slowly, that makes you notice and remember these situations more on GG Poker than other sites?

The reason, it appear that way, is survivorship bias. When the "crazy moves" fail, these high variance players bust from the tournament as some of the first, and then they are obviously no longer there for you to see. But when they get lucky, they build a big stack early and kind of dominate the table with their wild play, until their luck runs out. So you basically only see one side of the story, which is why, it might appear as if, these wild players "always get lucky".

GG Poker dont allow tracking by sharkscope or other independent sites. But on other sites you can check out some of these wild players on Sharkscope and see their long term results, if they have opted in. And if you do that, you will find out, that most of them are long term losing players. On the other hand those players, who have consistent long term results, are the boring regulars with solid stats and play.

Last few days again pair over pair over pair.

Occasionally I'll look at rabbit cam too.

3 straight hands that everyone folded before flop, and it was 2QQ , same suits each time.

I play on other apps but I don't really get that many bad ezperiences as I do on GG - is it the players or the RNG - I don't think I'm the only one - share with me - if you think im crazy lol!!
GG is harder to me than other sites, I've never had good results there, although I don't put too much volume there, and the larger fields are harder to beat for sure, but bad beats happens everywhere.

I think turbo tournaments can be very tough for beginners because the blinds increase too fast. In turbo formats, you have very little time to wait for good hands, and the game becomes mostly about pre-flop all-ins. Regular structures are much better for practicing post-flop play.
